A 13-year-old lost her life crossing Eatonton Highway Saturday, despite all efforts by medical and rescue personnel.
Rylee Baird was pronounced deceased on the scene March 8 by Jones County Deputy Coroner Wayne Greer. The time of death was listed as 7:27 p.m. with the cause of death blunt force trauma from injuries received in the accident.
According to the report of the accident by Jones County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jared Marcum, the victim was walking north along Eatonton Highway just north of Industrial Boulevard and did not see the oncoming vehicle.
The report states she was struck as she attempted to cross the highway. The vehicle that struck her was a 2016 Grand Caravan that was traveling northbound. No charges were filed in the accident.
Greer stated in a March 10 interview that he was driving back to Gray when he saw there had been an accident and stopped. He said he was on the scene within five minutes of the call being dispatched at 6:58 p.m., and the ambulance and rescue were already on the scene.
The deputy coroner said he assisted with performing CPR on the victim, and the medical personnel did everything possible to resuscitate the victim.
“If she had been in a trauma center, there was nothing more that could have been done,” Greer stated.
