Three Jones County men are facing multiple drug charges as the result of a routine traffic stop with a very good chance of more charges to follow.
Davian Makar Daniel, 27, Denarian Jovon White, 38, and Tyler Ahmaud Williams, 26, were arrested April 24. All three were charged with possession and use of drug-related objects, felony possession of marijuana with the intent of distribution or sale and possession of schedule II control substances.
Daniels is also charged with obstruction of law enforcement officers.
Items seized in the arrest include a black bookbag containing two clear bags of marijuana, a digital scale, a grey shopping bag, three rolled marijuana cigars, suspected hash (hashish) wrapped in tinfoil, green bookbag containing a Play Station, black wallet, headphones, seven packages of marijuana, and a total of $244 in cash.
A report of their arrests by Gray Police Department Capt. Jacob Hunnicutt states he was patrolling the area of the crossing intersection in downtown Gray at about 3:45 p.m. April 24. He said the tag of a white Hyundai Sonata showed its registration was suspended, and he activated his lights and siren to perform a traffic stop.
The car stopped across from a church on Jefferson Street. Hunnicutt said, as he walked toward the vehicle, he caught an overwhelming odor of green marijuana coming from the car.
The captain said White was the driver of the Hyundai, and there were two other male occupants in the vehicle. He said he informed White why he was stopped and asked for identifications. The officer also called for backup.
The driver was questioned about the marijuana smell, and he said he had just smoked a marijuana joint. Hunnicutt noted that he did not smell any odor of burned marijuana nor did he see any indications from White that he had recently smoked marijuana.
GPD officer Dylan Joiner arrived at the scene. The captain asked White to step to the rear of the vehicle, and Joiner had Williams and Daniels step out of the car. All were searched, and then Hunnicutt started to search the vehicle.
He said White and Daniels attempted to walk away from the car. The captain said the men were told several times to stand by the vehicle.
Captain Eric Maynard arrived to assist. After the men refused to obey officers’ instructions, Maynard told Daniels to put his hands behind his back.
Hunnicutt said he handcuffed Williams, Joiner handcuffed White and then they assisted in handcuffing Daniels.
After the men were in custody, the search of the car continued with the assistance of GPD Maj. Mark Robinson. The green bookbag was found in the backseat. Seven prepackaged pouches of marijuana were in the bag, all with different labels. Those labels stated the weight of the product in each pouch was 3.5 grams, and the marijuana was 33 percent or more of THC.
The tinfoil package suspected of being hash was found in the glovebox. A rolled marijuana cigar was on the passenger floorboard and a large glass jar filled with a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana was found under the front passenger seat.
Both packaged and loose marijuana was in the jar. Two partially smoked marijuana cigars were found in the back seat near the middle console.
A black book bag was found in the wheel well of the trunk containing two large, clear bags of suspected marijuana.
Hunnicutt said Maynard and Joiner transported the three suspects to the Jones County Law Enforcement Center, and the seized items were secured and logged into evidence.
The captain said warrants were secured for the three suspects for possession of Schedule I drug with the intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of marijuana more than an ounce and possession of drug-related objects. Daniels was also charged with obstruction and issued a citation for a suspended registration, which was the reason for the traffic stop.
In a conversation about the traffic stop with Hunnicutt and Robinson, the major said if the substance packaged in tinfoil is proven to be hash, trafficking charges could be added.
