Deputy chief honored for decades of service

GRAY FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Gray Fire Department paid tribute last week to a retiring volunteer firefighter who served citizens and fellow firefighters for three decades.

Fire Chief Keith Eisele presided over the recognition for GFD Deputy Chief Karl Zimmer that was held June 16 at the beginning of the meeting of city committees.

Eisele began talking about Zimmer’s legacy of service that began when he joined the department in May of 1997, after moving from Maryland.

“From day one, Karl hit the ground running. He quickly updated his certifications to meet Georgia standards and became a trusted, reliable part of our team,” the chief said.

He said he has worked with Zimmer for more than 20 years, and he is more than a colleague.

“He’s been a brother; someone I could always counts on,” the chief said.

Eisele said no matter the task, Zimmer has always led by example. He said over the years, the honoree has personally contributed to the training and development of more than 100 new firefighters.

Zimmer has worn many hats, including lieutenant, captain, training officer and deputy chief.

“Regardless of the title, he brought the same level of commitment, professionalism and integrity to every role he stepped into,” Eisele said.

In addition to being a firefighter, Zimmer also worked behind the scenes to secure critical resources for the GFD, including the department’s first thermal imaging camera and its first gas monitor in the earl 2000s.

“He has consistently shown that leadership is not just about rank — it’s about reliability, wisdom, mentorship and giving back to the team. This is demonstrated through actions, not rank,” the chief said.

In addition to retiring, Zimmer is also relocating out of state. His last day with the GFD is June 30.

“To say you’ll be missed is an understatement. Your work ethic, your humor, your nonsense honesty and your loyalty left a permanent mark on the City of Gray Fire Department,” Eisele concluded.
