Joan Caraway Gattie

July 26, 1943 - July 6, 2024

Joan Caraway Gattie passed away Saturday morning, July 6, 2024, at Brightmoor Hospice with her loving family at her side. A visitation for family and friends was held Tuesday, July 9, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gray Memorial Chapel. A celebration of life was held Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev.

Interment followed at Cedar Ridge Cemetery.

Joan was born on July 26, 1943, to the late Joe Caraway and Nell Barlow Caraway in Macon, Georgia. She was also preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Ralph Samuel Gattie. She made Jones County her home for most of her life.

Joan retired from Georgia Kaolin Company after thirty-five years of service, as the secretary for the plant manager.

She served as the church secretary for New Hope Baptist Church where she also taught Sunday School. Joan enjoyed the activities at Oak Grove Community Center, Cochran, Georgia.

She was an avid bowler and member of the Pin Pals and Rascals bowling team. Joan leaves behind a legacy of self-determined independence that served her well. Her children will find comfort in her strong, tough, stubborn nature that contributed to her self-sufficiency in later life. She is survived by her children, Duane (Tracy) Gattie and their children; Cory and Dylan, Pam (Keith) Skinner and their children; Dakota (Lauren) Skinner, Kaylee (Isaiah) Jones, Nic (Macy) Skinner, and Jacob (Megan) Skinner; sisters, Brenda Turner (Ed Robinson), Carol (Richard) Soles, Lynn (Roy) Batchelor; seven great-grandchildren and special friend, Sara Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Brightmoor Hospice and are grateful for the care shown by their staff to Mrs. Gattie. The family received guests at Mrs.

Gattie’s home on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 390 Stonewall Drive, Macon, Georgia 31211.
