Real Life

Why do we grow old and die? The Bible tells us the reason is sin. Adam, because of his willful sin, brought death into the world. In Gen. 2:17, God told Adam that the very day in which he ate the fruit of the forbidden tree, he would die. When Adam ate that fruit, he instantly died spiritually, and began to progressively die physically, that is, to age.

Adam passed along sin and death to the rest of mankind. Because of this, everyone will know death. Rom. 5:12 says, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

Because of sin, humans will never live much beyond the 115-year mark. In fact, the Bible says that the average life span is 70-80 years (Ps. 90:10), and that the maximum life span is about 120 years (Gen. 6:3). And obeying God’s word, instead of seeking magic elixirs, can help one to live out a long life. “For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they (God’s laws) add to thee” (Pr. 3:1,2).

While no cure for physical aging or death exists, there is a cure for your spiritual death. Jesus said, “And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believeth thou this?” (John 11:26).
