JCHS hosts youth football coaches, volunteers for clinic

When youth football kicks off this fall in Jones County, it will do so with the strong connection to the JCHS football program.

That connection and its importance was galvanized earlier this week during two nights of a youth football coaches clinic led by the Greyhounds coaching staff at the Jones County football field house. There’s intent behind that model, as the goal is for the youth football program to serve as a key part of the feeder system to the middle and high school levels. That included youth football coaches and volunteers being given a full overview of the Greyhound football program’s philosophies, beliefs and focal points.

“We understand the value in the future of our program,” Jones County head coach Justin Montgomery told the coaches and volunteers in attendance. “That’s why we’re going to invest in you.”

Monday was mostly focused on defense with the priority on Tuesday being on the offensive side of the ball.

Greyhounds coaches led sessions based around the coaching staff’s overall philosophy, practice techniques and methods prior to breaking up into sessions led by JCHS assistant football coaches. Plans are in place for volunteer coaches to have contact info of high school coaches, giving them another resource to lean on during the upcoming youth football season.

The deadline of Aug. 1 remains as the deadline to sign up for this fall’s Jones County Youth football leagues. Football is open to ages 5-12 with girls flag football for those ages 7-14 while cheerleading is open to ages 5-14.

Registration is online with in-person registration being offered July 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Aug. 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
