Lady Hounds keep focus, make quick work of Southwest

Coming away from Christmas, there was no seasonal generosity extended to Southwest Macon by the Lady Greyhounds Saturday at the JCHS Gymnasium.

Jones County didn’t take a team that it had beaten earlier this year by 50 points lightly, preventing the Patriots from reaching double digits until the third quarter in a 63-13 win.

Based on the rigor of practices in recent days, the wide margin of victory was hardly stunning.

“We had some good practices and did a few live scrimmages to try and keep as fresh as possible,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Takeo Gray said. “We were really proud of their effort.”

Mya Anderson’s 14 points and five steals led the way with Kamiyah Adams contributing 11 points and pulling down four rebounds. Destinee Dumas chipped in 10 points to go with Aubrey Norris’ 10 assists and four steals.

One of many reasons for the big margin of victory was the way that Jones County knocked down shots at will from three-point range, led by two apiece from Anderson and Dumas.

But there was more to the Lady Greyhounds’ goals than just the final score on Saturday. In front of next Saturday’s road game at Putnam County and the final two region games of the first half of that slate, JCHS is aiming to build momentum.

“We had different ways to challenge them,” Gray said. “We put plays in and set goals for each quarter for how many points we wanted to give up.”

The Lady Hounds, ranked eighth in the most recent statewide rankings, are 11-1 overall and 7-0 in the region. The region’s first-place team at the end of the regular season receives a bye to the region tournament semifinals and automatic state tourney berth.
