MERCY! Greyhounds drop hammer on McDonough in pair of shutout wins

With the season moving towards its endpoint ahead of the state playoffs, the Greyhounds are locked into fourth place in the region standings with just two region games against ELCA remaining after spring break.

For sure, Jones County began the season with higher goals than its current state when it comes to the region. Despite that, the Greyhounds are hardly a listless bunch. That showed in a pair of razorsharp focused wins last week against McDonough.

JCHS first took a 12-0 road win on Wednesday before a 14-0 home victory on Thursday for senior night.

“The big thing was that we didn’t want to take anybody out. Nothing against McDonough, but we had an opponent where we could let our guys get their reps and get all of our pitchers that we wanted to in,” Greyhounds head coach Noble Coley said. “We’ve had some times in the season where seniors have not been in the lineup, so it was important to get them in and get them reps.”

Wednesday’s win saw JCHS strike for three runs in the first and five an inning later prior to five more in the fifth. Cooper Rice, Drew Williams and Cooper Snook combined for a three-hitter. Rice fanned five opposing batters with Williams striking out four as the two pitchers each threw a pair of innings. Snook came along to pitch an inning of relief.

At the plate, a balanced effort saw Rice and Davis Upshaw have two hits with eight others having one. Rice drove four runs with Williams and MJ Lane having a pair of RBIs and Upshaw ripping a double and single.

That effort carried over to Friday’s win as well for JCHS as it improved to 15-7 overall and 11-5 in the region.

The Greyhounds return from spring break on Friday when they host Glynn Academy, a tune-up leading into the postseason where Jones County will face the Region 6-AAAA champion, most likely Blessed Trinity.

“My message to them was, ‘You did what you were supposed to.

You’re starting to do some of the right things, so you are starting to get hot at the right time.’ We have not accomplished some of the things we wanted to, but there are still some things to look ahead to that we can accomplish,” Coley said. “This little vibe that we have within the team right now, they are coming together at the right time, and I am anxious to see what is going to happen the rest of the season.”
