SUPERIOR COURT
Luke Deeb, a 13-year-old local Jones Countian, wrote his own book and is ready to show it off to the community.
Ashley Deeb, Luke’s mother, said they have lived in Jones County their entire lives, and she’s attended First Baptist Church since she was a baby.
Luke said he likes Jones County and what it has to offer.
“I like the environment here.
It’s not as big as other cities, so I like that,” he said. “You can see people you know a lot, because it is a smaller town. It’s a great place to grow up.”
He said he was excited when his book was published and hopes everyone will enjoy it.
He said he’s very proud of his accomplishment.
“The book is called Deceived by Lies, Tortured by Truth.
It’s a story about a character named Carl and his dad’s death.
He attempts to solve his dad’s death, and throughout the book it shows how that goes. It’s a mystery,” Luke said.
The young author said he wanted to write a book, because his mother inspired him to write. He said she has a lot of books, and she is also an author, so he wanted to follow in her footsteps. “My favorite thing about writing my book was thinking about the setting and being the one to make the story come alive on paper,” he said. “I think it’s more for middle schoolers, and people who enjoy reading mysteries will probably like it.”
Luke said he might write a sequel to the book next year, but he’s not sure. He said he’s around writing a lot at home since his mother is a published author.
He said the writing process from start to finish was more difficult than he thought.
“It was more difficult than I thought to get what I wanted down. I had to think about what readers would like, not just what I like. I want my readers to enjoy it. I needed to find the best words to put down,” he said.
His mother said she feels he gained a new respect for how much thought goes into writing a novel. She said he really thought about how to engage his readers and submerse them into the world of the book.
“I was so excited for him to hold his book in his hands for the first time. It’s a feeling you can almost get drunk off, and I hope that feeling inspires him to keep writing as he gets older,” she said.
Ashley said she wanted to support him as much as she could, but she knew his journey was going to be hard.
She said she didn’t read his book until he was finished with it.
“I’m very proud of him. There were times when I wondered if he was going to get it done, but he proved me wrong,” Luke’s mother said. “As an author myself, I know the potential this has in it. I hope he sticks with it, but I will respect his dreams and what he wants to do.”
Luke said being able to hold his book was a great feeling, and his mother was his biggest supporter in writing his novel.
He said he isn’t sure if he’ll continue to write when he’s older. He said he wants to see where life takes him.
“I like reading mystery novels, so I took a lot of inspiration from others when writing my own,” the young author said. “I feel like Jones County will really like my book. I’m excited for people to read it.”
