17-year-old arrested for stealing car, fleeing police

SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Jones County’s Flock cameras were again instrumental in the recovery of a stolen car and apprehension of offenders involved.

Lonnie Terrell Brown III, 17, was arrested Aug. 15 and charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police for a felony offense, misdemeanor obstruction of law enforcement officers, felony theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies and several traffic violations.

A report of the arrest by Jones County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kasey Carr stated that he was working routine patrol when he received a Flock camera alert to a stolen vehicle entering Jones County. Carr said he verified the vehicle tag that was identified as a brown Honda Accord was the same car in the picture received from the Flock camera.

The sergeant said he was traveling southbound on Gray Highway, and he saw the Honda pass him in the northbound lane. He said Deputy Steven Astyk was behind the Honda following it up Gray Highway.

Carr made a U-turn and caught up with the Honda near Sandcreek Trail, and Astyk advised him to take the lead. The sergeant then attempted the traffic stop but noticed a cloud of black smoke from the Honda as it was picking up speed.

He said the pursuit continued with lights and siren activated, reaching speeds of 100 mph in a 65-mph zone. Carr said Astyk reported seeing a bag thrown from the passenger window of the Honda striking the front of his patrol car.

Carr said the Honda made an abrupt turn onto Creekside Drive and continued through the subdivision into the backyard of a residence on Plantation Road. The deputy said they were familiar with the home and knew there was a driveway on the other side as well.

The deputies circled back to cut off the Honda. They saw three doors open on the car and three subjects running into the woods. After a brief search, he said tracking dogs were requested to assist.

Carr said an inventory of the Honda revealed a pistol on the passenger floorboard and a multicolored backpack. He said no further contraband was found in the car, and a wrecker was called to take possession of it.

The deputy said he heard Sgt. John Humphries on the radio getting out with two females walking on Plantation Road. The females, identified as Jamaya Daniels and Selena Williams, confirmed they were in the Honda and ran from the scene.

Carr said the search was called off due to the heat. He said information was received from interviewing the females that the Honda had been stolen from a motel in Macon and driven by Brown. The offender was arrested the following morning at his home by JCSO Investigator Barron Hall.

The sergeant said Brown admitted he was the driver of the Honda and did not stop because “he knew we would charge him with everything.”

The suspect said the pistol did not belong to him and then stated that was all he had to say.

Carr said warrants were secured for Brown on multiple charges, including felony theft by receiving stolen property, and for Daniels and Williams for obstruction of an officer.
