September’s second Tuesday meeting of the Board of Commissioners took less than 10 minutes with board members making quick work of the short meeting agenda.
Board Chairman Chris Weidner called the Sept. 15 meeting to order and led the opening prayer and pledge.
The first item was board appointments. The recommendation was to reappoint Alex Smith to the Board of Directors of River Edge Behavioral Health for a three-year term. Commissioner Sam Kitchens made the motion, and it was approved unanimously.
After approval of the consent agenda and approval of the minutes, the first item of New Business was the contract renewal between Jones County and Central Georgia Technical College for the use of the building located at 304 Old Clinton Road. The building was the former home of the Older Americans Council.
County Administrator Jason Rizner said the contract for the lease renewal is the same as has been previously approved between the entities. The building is now used to provide GED classes to Jones County students.
Commissioner Daylon Martin made the motion to approve the contract renewal, and the motion passed with a unanimous vote.
Weidner presented a proclamation to students at the center the morning of Sept. 15 in honor of Adult Literacy Day.
Clerk of the Board Shannon Wagner presented an application for a Beer and Wine License for a business located at 3356 Joycliff Road. She said Jones County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Barron Hall handled the background check and came back with a good report.
Martin made the motion to approve the license, and the vote to approve was unanimous.
The approval of a resolution authorizing filing a grant application for Jones County Transit was added to the agenda at the beginning of the meeting. Rizner explained it was an annual renewal for the 5311 transportation service.
Kitchens made the motion to approve the resolution, and the motion passed unanimously. The commissioner asked Rizner if there had been an increase in usage of the service, but the administrator said he did not have that information.
Commissioner John Wood asked for a report of the use of Jones County Transit at the next meeting.
The only item of Old Business was a vote for a motion that was missed at the previous meeting. Wagner explained while she was working on the minutes of the Sept. 1 meeting, she realized that awarding the FY25 LMIG bid to MHB Paving had been discussed by board members but there had been no formal motion or second.
Martin made the motion to approve the bid award, and the motion was approved unanimously.
Weidner asked for comments from the community, department heads and board members, but there were none.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:06 p.m.
The next meeting of the Board of Commissioners is scheduled Oct. 6.
