BOE promotes internally to fill vacant posts

Jones County Board of Education members had a brief called meeting to attend to several budget items, followed by a lengthy closed session.

Board Chairman Ginger Bailey called the June 26 meeting to order, and Interim Superintendent Clinton Burston quickly got into the action items on the agenda.

All board members were in attendance, with the exception of Kim Washburn.

Burston recommended approval of the renewal for the Jones County School System Workers Compensation and General Insurance with Selective Premium Insurance at the total cost of $669,701 utilizing funds from the general fund budget.

Board member Brady Skinner made the motion to approve, and the motion passed unanimously.

Skinner commented the renewal was a 10 percent increase, which is not bad for today’s market.

The next item was the continuation of the partnership with the Jones County Board of Commissioners to support Jones County’s Operation Early Intervention Program at a cost of $46,025 utilizing funds from the general fund budget. Dr. Nancy Nash made the motion to approve the recommendation, and it was unanimously approved.

Burston recommended the continuation of the agreement with the commissioners to cover one half of the salaries for the Jones County Library at a cost of $33,263, utilizing funds from the general fund. Skinner made the motion, and approval was unanimous.

Bailey commented that the library staff does a great job, and the library is an essential service for the community.

The final budget recommendation was approval of a contract with GHC Mechanical to install five Water Source Comfort System HVAC units at Jones County High School for the estimated amount of $39,718, utilizing funds from the maintenance and operations budget. Burston said they were all instrumental units. Board member Mike Gordon made the motion, and it was approved unanimously.

The meeting was adjourned to enter closed session at 5:45 p.m. and returned at 7:30 p.m.

When the meeting reconvened, Burston recommended approval of two personnel changes. Christine Giles was moved to the position of curriculum director, replacing Mary Frances Stewart, and Stacy Carr was moved to the position of federal program and assessment director, replacing Charlotte Foskey. Both Stewart and Foskey retired from their positions.

Nash made the motion to approve the recommendations. The motion was approved unanimously, and the meeting was adjourned.
