Crime Watch

The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Sept. 19-23, 2024.

Sept. 19

Rough economy

Corp. Sullivan was on patrol when he received an alert from a Flock Camera at Gray Highway and the Gray Bypass of a vehicle with suspended registration.

Sullivan ran the tag number, and it came back to show the vehicle’s registration was suspended, it had no insurance, and the registered owner had an expired license.

Sullivan noticed the vehicle while it was traveling southbound near RL Wheeler Road. At that time, the corporal turned his vehicle around and caught up to the vehicle in question. When Sullivan made contact with the male driver, the subject stated he “knew it was expired” but Sullivan was not sure if he was talking about the registration or his license. Sullivan advised the male subject that both were expired and according to the GCIC system, the vehicle had no insurance. The male subject replied to Sullivan that “it was a rough economy.” The corporal then asked the male if he did have insurance and the male stated, “not yet.” Sullivan filled out citations and called for the next wrecker service to come get the vehicle.

The male driver was placed in handcuffs and transported to the Jones County LEC where he was booked for his citations.

Wanted out of Fulton County

Deputy Marcum was monitoring traffic on Highway 49 near Pecan Drive when he noticed a distracted driver. The driver was holding a phone up to his face. Marcum activated his emergency lights and the vehicle pulled over on Highway 49 near Pamela Drive.

When Marcum made contact with the male driver, he advised the reason for the stop and asked for his driver’s license. Marcum ran the male’s information through the GCIC system, and it came back to show the subject was wanted out of Fulton County. Fulton County advised they wanted the subject.

Marcum placed the male subject under arrest per the warrant. The vehicle was turned over to a local wrecker service and the male was transported to the Jones County LEC where he was released to jailers.

Sept. 20

Discharge of firearm

Deputy Marcum and Deputy Reno were monitoring traffic on Highway 49 near Pamela Drive when they heard a distinct and single gunshot come from down the road. Both deputies headed south on Highway 49 and noticed a vehicle parked on the side of the road. Marcum noticed the driver’s side door of the vehicle ajar and could see someone crouching behind the vehicle. The deputy saw a female subject stand up from behind the vehicle with a pistol in her hand. At that time, Marcum drew his department issued firearm while giving loud commands to the female to put the gun down. The female complied and was ordered to get on the ground. Once again, the female subject complied, and Marcum held her at gunpoint until Reno could handcuff her. The female began to tell the deputies the gun was to defend herself. When asked what she was defending herself from, the female stated that she followed a man out of a gas station because he looked suspicious. The female also stated that while she was following the suspicious man, she became scared and fired her gun one time out of safety. Marcum noticed the female’s eyes were bloodshot and her speech was slurred. The female was also irrationally angry with Marcum and Reno. The female was extremely intoxicated, and Marcum was never able to understand when and how she became scared of the man she was following. Marcum retrieved the pistol with one round still in the barrel. The female was charged with discharging a firearm near a public roadway, discharging a firearm while intoxicated and reckless conduct.

Sept. 23

Break in

Deputy Elrod was dispatched to Homer Roberts Road in reference to a break in at a local business.

The complainant advised that when they arrived at work, they discovered the business had been broken into. The bottom left window of the business had been busted out. Deputy Dennis arrived on scene and assisted.

Dennis cleared the interior of the business and found several items that had been knocked down.

Marcum took photos of the scene and conducted a check of the security cameras. Upon review of the video footage, Marcum saw a male subject had approached the front of the business, walked past the front doors several times and disappeared from sight for a few minutes. The male subject then returned back into camera view and proceeded to bust out the bottom window of the business.

The male could be seen entering the business with two backpacks/ bags. The subject attempted to get a cigarette case open, however was unsuccessful and ended up knocking the case on its side. The male subject seemed to be frantic and appeared that he was unable to take anything of value. The black bookbag was left on the ground when the subject finally retreated from the business. The bookbag was collected and placed into evidence. At this time, there are no items that were listed as missing from the business per the employees. The incident was turned over to investigations.
