The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Jan. 2-8, 2025.
Jan. 2
Active warrant
Deputy Langston was patrolling New Clinton Road when he ran a tag number on a vehicle to check for insurance and registration.
The NCIC check came back to show the vehicle had suspended registration, no insurance, the registered owner had a suspended license and an active warrant out of Bibb County. At that time, Langston conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. When Langston made contact with the male driver, he asked the subject for his driver’s license and the male advised the deputy that he did not have his license. The deputy advised the male driver that his license was suspended and then placed him in wrist restraints.
The male driver was placed in the backseat of the patrol vehicle and transported to the Jones County LEC where he was issued citations for no insurance, driving on a suspended license and a ticket for the suspended registration.
Jan. 5
Expired registration, multiple warrants
Deputy Elrod was on patrol when he was alerted that a vehicle traveling southbound on Gray Highway had expired registration. Elrod conducted a search of the GCIC/NCIC system, and the result indicated that the vehicle registration was expired, and the registered owner was wanted out of Bibb County for multiple warrants. Elrod initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the male driver which was the registered owner of the vehicle. Elrod advised the male driver to exit the vehicle and placed the male in handcuffs.
The deputy then transported the male subject to the Jones County LEC where he was issued a citation for expired registration and was held for Bibb County to pick him up.
Jan. 7
Theft by shoplifting
Sgt. Humphries answered a call in reference to shoplifting at a local business. The manager of the business and one other employee stated they witnessed the theft. Humphries was able to review the store’s security camera and it showed a female subject and a male subject entering the store empty handed. The footage then shows the two taking goods, however exactly what they took was not known. The footage also showed the male and female subject exit the business, and the female carrying several containers of air fresheners and the male carrying a large black bag or tied up blanket with a large bundle inside suspected to be stolen goods. The two subjects never stopped to pay for the items. The outside security cameras showed the two subjects left in a vehicle traveling north towards the Jones/Bibb County line on Highway 49. None of the employees at the business seemed to recognize the male or female subject. The amount and value of the goods taken are pending an inventory and further review by the business staff. This incident remains active at this time.
Jan 8
Theft by receiving stolen property and marijuana
Corp. Sullivan was patrolling the area of Henderson Road when he passed a vehicle with a shattered windshield. Sullivan turned around and got behind the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. When Sullivan made contact with the female driver and male passenger, he advised the female of the reason for the stop was her windshield. The female driver advised the officer that she was aware of it, and she has an appointment to get if fixed. Sullivan then ran the driver’s information through the GCIC/NCIC database, and it came back to show that the registration on the vehicle was suspended and no valid insurance.
While speaking with the female driver, Sullivan could faintly smell the odor of marijuana and a very powerful food smell coming from inside the vehicle. The female advised Sullivan that she delivers food for a mobile app. Deputy Elrod arrived on scene to assist, and Sullivan had the deputy go to the passenger side of the vehicle to get a better visual on the female as she seemed to be moving her body to block Sullivan from seeing something.
Deputy Elrod asked the female driver and male passenger about the odor of marijuana and then asked them both to step out of the vehicle. When the male passenger exited the vehicle, Elrod noticed that the subject quickly got out and swiftly moved past the deputy.
Sullivan asked the male passenger if he had any drugs or weapons on him and the male said no. Sullivan then advised the male that he would be searching his person and instructed the male to put his hands in the air. Once Sullivan got to the male’s front waistband, he felt a magazine of a gun and then instructed the male not to reach for it. Sullivan pulled a Glock 30 .45 caliber with a 24-round magazine from the male’s person. Sullivan advised the male passenger to take a seat on bumper of his patrol car. The male subject began to start looking around and moving around as if he was getting ready to run. At that time, Sullivan placed the male in the backseat of his patrol car. The gun showed to be stolen in 2024 from a local business via a check of the GCIC/NCIC website. Deputy Elrod searched the vehicle and found a small bag of marijuana in the seat that the passenger was sitting in. The female driver was given citations for windshield requirements, suspended registration and no insurance and released. The male passenger was transported to the Jones County Jail where he was charged with possession of marijuana and theft by receiving stolen property for the firearm.
