The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department March 21-22, 2025.
March 21
Spit flying out
Deputy Johnson made contact with Bibb County Deputy Mattox in reference to a subject with a valid warrant out of Jones County. The Bibb deputy arrived and turned over a male subject to Johnson. Mattox advised Johnson that the male was slightly uncooperative with her and would not talk to her. Johnson then spoke to the male subject and asked him to cooperate with him so he would not have to be mean. The male subject refused to exit deputy Mattox’s patrol vehicle on his own so Johnson had to drag the male subject out of the vehicle and carry the subject to his patrol car. As Johnson began to place his handcuffs on the male and take deputy Mattox’s cuffs off, the male began to get upset that another set of cuffs were being placed on him. As the male subject began to yell, spit started flying out of his mouth.
Johnson pushed the male subject toward the rear of his patrol car and advised the male not to spit on him again. Eventually, Johnson was able to get the cuffs swapped out and forced the male into the rear seat of his patrol car. Johnson then transported the male to the Jones County LEC where jail staff also had to drag the male subject out of the deputy’s patrol vehicle. The male subject was served his probation warrant and turned over to jail staff.
DUI/Marijuana
Deputy Elrod was patrolling the area of Joycliff Road when he observed a vehicle in front of him that was unable to maintain lane and consistent speed. The vehicle would speed up to approximately 50 mph then slow down to about 35 mph. The vehicle then made an abrupt turn onto Baker Road in what appeared to be an attempt to evade the deputy’s presence behind it. Elrod went down Hwy. 49 to see if the vehicle would come back out on Whitaker Road. At that time, the deputy saw the vehicle turning right off Hwy. 49 onto Griswoldville Road at a higher rate of speed than normal.
Elrod intercepted the vehicle on Griswoldville Road near E. Virginia Lane. The vehicle turned right on E. Virginia Lane and Elrod followed behind the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. When contact was made with the female driver, the deputy noticed that her eyes were bloodshot, and she appeared to be intoxicated. Her speech was also slurred. Elrod noticed an unopened beer can and an overwhelming smell of a banana/coconut flavored fragrance coming from inside the vehicle. Elrod asked the female driver if she had anything to drink, and the female stated that she had a few shots a few hours ago. The deputy asked the female if there was anything else in the vehicle that he needed to know about, and she advised that there was marijuana in the vehicle. When the female driver was asked to exit the vehicle, she advised Elrod that her ankles were injured from a previous incident that Elrod had assisted her with a few weeks prior. The female was asked to perform a Standardized Field Sobriety test and she agreed to do so but stated she was in a lot of pain from her ankles. Elrod allowed the female to prop up against the bumper of his patrol vehicle and began the test. Four out of six clues were noted on the test. The deputy opted not to conduct the Walk and Turn, and the One leg Stand due to the female’s ankle injury. The female provided a breath sample on the roadside, and it came back positive for alcohol. The female driver was then placed in handcuffs and read the Implied Consent for suspects over the age of 21. The female also agreed to the blood draw. During a search of the vehicle, Elrod located marijuana between the passenger seat and the center console inside the vehicle. The female was being cooperative and told the deputy where the marijuana was located. The female was then taken to the Jones County LEC for booking and blood draw then issued citations for DUI combo A1/A2/ A3 and possession of marijuana less than one ounce.
March 22
Warrants, marijuana and false name
Deputy Ribeiro initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle that had suspended registration. Prior to the stop, Ribeiro noticed a lot of movement inside the vehicle on the passenger side and it appeared that the rear of the vehicle was bouncing. The vehicle finally came to a stop and the deputy made contact with the female driver and two male passengers. The female driver provided the deputy with her driver’s license. When Ribeiro ran the female’s information it came back to show she was wanted by the Byron Police. The female stated she was taking her boyfriend to the hospital because he was having chest pains. Ribeiro advised dispatch to send an ambulance to his location so the male could be checked out. Deputy Langston arrived on scene to assist, and Ribeiro told the female to step out of the vehicle. When the female opened the vehicle door, the deputy smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Ribeiro advised the female that she had a warrant out of Byron then asked her when was the last time she had weed in the vehicle. The female advised the deputy that she doesn’t smoke in the vehicle and there was no weed inside the vehicle. The deputy then asked the two male passengers to step out of the vehicle. EMS had arrived on scene and began checking the boyfriend of the female. The other male passenger introduced himself by giving his name and date of birth. Ribeiro attempted to search the database by name and date of birth the male passenger gave, but nothing would come up. Dispatch also tried to run the male’s information given but no results were found. Deputy Langston stayed with the two male subjects while Ribeiro searched the vehicle. The deputy located a glass smoking pipe that contained a white powdery substance and burn marks on the bottom of the bowl which is commonly used to smoke methamphetamine. Ribeiro asked who the pipe belonged to, and no one would claim the pipe was theirs.
The deputy advised the subjects that if no one claimed it, they would all be charged with it. Ribeiro went back to Langston’s patrol car and read the female her Miranda Rights. The female admitted that the pipe belonged to her. The deputy then went back to the male subject that could not be identified and advised the male that he was going to call someone who has a fingerprint device so the male could be identified. At that moment, the male gave the deputy his correct name and date of birth. The male subject also advised the deputy that he was wanted out of Twiggs County. Ribeiro advised the male he was being charged with giving a false name and date of birth.
While searching the male’s pockets the deputy located marijuana and the male stated he did not know it was in there. The deputy continued to search and found a few syringes that contained a clear liquid. The vehicle was turned over to the boyfriend and the female driver and other male passenger were transported to the Jones County LEC.
