The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department July 18-22, 2025.
July 18
Suspended license
Dep. Sullivan was on patrol traveling Northbound on Gray Hwy. when he ran a tag number on a vehicle ahead of him to check for valid registration. The information from the GCIC system informed the deputy that the registered owner of the vehicle had a suspended driver’s license. Using his emergency lights, Sullivan initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The deputy made contact with the female driver and advised her the reason for the stop. While speaking to the female driver, Sullivan noticed a very loud smell of burnt marijuana. The deputy had dispatch run the female’s license number and they advised Sullivan the female did have a suspended license.
Sullivan asked the female about the smell of marijuana and asked the female how much was in the vehicle. The female stated there wasn’t any in the vehicle, the smell was from when she smoked earlier. Sullivan allowed the female driver to call someone to come get her vehicle, and then she was placed in handcuffs while the deputy searched the vehicle. During the vehicle search, Sullivan found a small amount of marijuana in a plastic bag in the center console. Sullivan advised the female of finding the marijuana and disposed of it on the roadside. The female driver was transported to the Jones County LEC where she was issued a citation for suspended license then turned over to jail staff.
July 19
Felony shoplifting
Officer Josey responded to a local business in reference to a shoplifting that occurred two days prior. Josey met with the complainant and was advised that two females had stolen merchandise. The complainant advised that one female entered the business in one location and the other female entered the business at a different entrance. The two females met up in the business and were seen putting objects in the shopping cart.
On the video footage, it could be seen that one female subject left the business and got into a vehicle and was seen leaving the business parking lot, entering another business parking lot and then coming back to the business. When the first female subject left the inside of the business, footage showed the other female subject walking around the store aimlessly for a period of time then exiting the business with the shopping cart full of items. The second female is then seen getting into the vehicle with the first female subject. The vehicle is then seen leaving the premises in an unknown direction of travel. Josey was able to get an estimated cost of the items taken, and the actual total of items came up to $1,124.50. Due to the total of the merchandise taken, this was a case of felony theft by shoplifting. Josey was familiar with both the female subjects and was able to obtain a warrant on both females for theft by shoplifting. Due to not knowing the two female subjects whereabouts, the warrants were placed on the GCIC system.
July 21
911 hang up call
Dep. Dennis responded to a local residence in reference to a 911 hang up call. Once on scene, the deputy made contact with multiple individuals, and they all denied making the call. They also advised of a female that had been using the phone. Dennis asked to speak to the female subject, and she came from the upstairs area of the residence to speak with the deputy. The female subject stated that they were being harassed by another individual and the individual had tried to go into her mother’s bank accounts. Dennis asked the female subject for her name and date of birth and at that time her demeanor changed, and she seemed to get softer spoken and drawn. Dep. Dennis, at that time, asked the female if she herself had a warrant and she advised that she did. The female stated she was going to court to take care of it, she had missed a court date in 2019. Dennis advised the female that if she had a valid warrant, she would have to be arrested. The deputy ran the female’s information with dispatch and was advised the female was wanted and the warrant was confirmed.
Dennis took the female into custody by handcuffing her and secured her in his patrol vehicle.
Dispatch advised the deputy that Bibb County Sheriff’s Office dispatch would contact a road supervisor and see if they could meet Dennis. After agreed by Bibb County, Dennis went to the location given to meet them with the female subject. No one ever arrived from Bibb County.
Due to “medical conditions” noted on the female’s warrant, it was determined by Lt. Hart at the Jones County jail, that they would not hold her here. Bibb County was then notified that the female would be released from custody and transported back to her residence. Prior to leaving the female’s residence, Dennis advised the female to take care of the warrant and she stated she would.
July 22
A little tipsy
Officer Pointer was on routine patrol when dispatch sent out a BOLO for a possible intoxicated driver. The driver was said to have entered Southern Walk Circle neighborhood and drove around the neighborhood several times before leaving and headed back towards Gray. The caller stated that the vehicle was not maintaining its lane and the driver had stopped at a stop sign and had to be woke up. Officer Pointer and Officer Joiner observed the vehicle as it approached a red light. The female driver had to slam on breaks at the light to keep from hitting the car in front of her. Officer Joiner pulled out behind the female driver to observe her driving ability.
Upon approaching the red light at West Clinton and Jackson Avenue, Capt. Hunnicutt advised Joiner to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle as the female was following too closely to the car in front of her. Officer Joiner activated his blue lights and the driver continued behind the vehicles that were stopped at the red light. Pointer pulled onto the shoulder and observed the female driver looking disoriented and confused. Pointer ordered the female to pull over and she acted is if she didn’t understand.
Once the red light changed, the female driver pulled over.
Officer Pointer approached the vehicle and the female driver again appeared to be very confused as Capt. Hunnicutt spoke to her. Hunnicutt asked the female to exit the vehicle and when she did so, she left the car in drive. Pointer was able to place the vehicle in park quickly.
Once outside the vehicle, the female seemed to be confused about what was going on.
Hunnicutt and Joiner advised the female the reason she was pulled over. The female subject did not know what day and what time it was and admitted to drinking vodka. The female had an unknown substance on her shirt believed to be vomit. The female almost fell to the ground and had to be caught by Capt.
Hunnicutt. The female then slipped down to the ground next to a patrol vehicle and leaned on the tire.
She refused to stand up and cooperate after being advised several times to do so. The officers finally assisted the female driver to her feet, placed her in handcuffs, read her Implied Consent for over 21 and placed her in Officer Joiner’s patrol vehicle.
While reading the Implied Consent, the female kept interrupting Pointer. The female would not respond with a yes or a no, so Pointer accepted that as a refusal. Officer Joiner transported the female to the Jones County Jail and turned her over to jail staff.
Once Officer Pointer arrived at the jail, he entered and printed citations for DUI, DUI refusal, DUI less safe, failure to maintain lane, following too closely and reckless driving. The female refused to sign the citations and did not know where she was. Pointer also observed that the female had seemed to get sick again and threw up in the holding cell. Pointer again turned the female over to jail staff and went back in service.
