The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Jan. 15-21, 2026
Jan. 15
Illegal dumping
Dep. Shurley was dispatched to Patterson Rd. in reference to a report of illegal dumping. The complainant advised that someone had dumped a load of tires off on the side of the road by family property. Upon arrival, Shurley met with the complainant and was shown the location where the tires were dumped. Shurley counted a total of 17 tractor trailer tires ranging in sizes, which led the deputy to believe that someone didn’t feel the need to pay for a disposal fee and decided to dump the tires on the side of the road.
Jones County Public Works was requested and came and loaded the tires and see that they were disposed of properly. Shurley asked Dispatchers to put in a patrol request for the area especially during the nighttime hours.
Jan. 18
Speeding
Officer Jones was sitting stationary on Eatonton Hwy. running front radar when he observed a vehicle going too fast.
Jones estimated the vehicle was running about 50 MPH. Jones activated his front radar and saw that the vehicle was traveling at 51 MPH in a 35-MPH speed zone. Jones pursued the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The officer made contact with the male driver and advised him the reason for the stop. While speaking to the male driver, Jones noticed a faint odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. The officer asked the male to step out of the vehicle and patted him down for weapons or contraband. Nothing was found on the male’s person.
Officer Jones then called for Lt.
Pennamon to stand by while he searched the vehicle. When Jones conducted the vehicle search, he found a small roach (marijuana) in the front driver’s side door. No other contraband was found in the vehicle. The marijuana roach was destroyed roadside. When the officer ran the male driver’s information through GCIC it came back valid. The male driver was given a verbal warning for speeding and released from the scene without incident.
Jan. 21
No headlight leads to trouble
Dep. Morris was patrolling the area of Hwy. 49 near Chapman Rd. when she observed a vehicle bearing a GA tag with the driver side headlight not working. Morris turned around and initiated her blue lights to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle pulled over and the deputy made contact with the male driver.
Morris advised the driver he was pulled over due to no headlight requirements and tag light requirements. The deputy then asked for the male’s driver’s license, and he advised that his license was suspended. Morris then had the male subject step out of the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs. The deputy confirmed that indeed his license was suspended. The male driver was transported to the Jones County LEC where he was issued three citations for driving while license suspended, headlight requirements and tag light requirements.
Jan. 21
No cell phones please
Officer Josey was patrolling the area of Bill Conn Pkwy. and West Clinton St. when he observed a driver on her cell phone. Josey then ran the GA tag number on the vehicle and discovered the registration was suspended. At that time, the officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. Josey made contact with the female driver and advised her the reason for the stop. The female driver was then issued a citation for operating a vehicle with suspended registration and a warning for Unlawful use of a wireless device.
Josey explained the citations to the female and she signed the court copy and was released from the stop.
