The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department July 7-12, 2026
July 7
Under the influence
Officer Holloway was on patrol when he observed a tractor trailer truck traveling East on West Clinton St. Holloway activated his blue lights to conduct a traffic stop. The tractor trailer turned onto Atlanta Rd. then stopped in the middle of the crossing intersection. After sitting stationary in the middle of the intersection for approximately 30-45 seconds, the tractor trailer started to reverse, almost backing into Holloway’s patrol vehicle. The officer immediately got on his PA system and advised the driver to drive forward out of the intersection. The driver complied and Holloway exited his vehicle and made contact with the male driver. As Holloway walked to the front of the truck to get the tag information, he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the driver’s side of the truck. The officer had the male driver exit the vehicle and advised the male that he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the truck and asked if he had recently smoked any. The male driver advised that he had smoked marijuana about four hours prior to the stop. Holloway then asked if there was any marijuana inside the truck. The male stated there was a lot of trash in the truck, and by trash he meant empty marijuana packages and/or containers.
Holloway advised the male that due to the odor he was going to perform a probable cause search on the truck. The officer began his search and immediately observed a cell phone propped up on the dash playing a movie. Holloway then located a hand rolled marijuana cigarette tucked in a pocket on the dash, two empty glass containers both containing a green residue, two plastic packages containing green residue and a marijuana grinder containing marijuana.
Holloway took possession of all items and placed them on his hood of his patrol vehicle where they were photographed for evidence.
Holloway then had the male driver perform a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Test to determine if he was under the influence. After the testing and for the following reasons, Officer Holloway believed that the male driver was under the influence of marijuana and less safe to drive, watching a video on a cell phone while driving a commercial vehicle, the odor of marijuana coming from within the truck, the admittance of smoking marijuana four hours prior to the stop, and lack of performance during the SFST. The male was placed in handcuffs and taken into custody.
Holloway read the male driver Georgia Implied Consent Notice for Suspects 21 years or older and asked for blood. The male agreed to the blood draw. Officer Holloway then transported the male driver to the Jones County LEC, and the on-call nurse was there for the blood draw.
The male driver was charged with: No thru truck/weight restrictions, unlawful uses of wireless device, DUI marijuana, DUI less safe, and possession of marijuana less than one ounce.
July 11
Outstanding warrants
Dep. Dominguez was dispatched to a location on Hwy. 49 to meet with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to take custody of a male subject that had been arrested by Bibb County deputies on outstanding warrants from Jones County. Once Dominguez arrived, the male subject was transferred to his custody. Prior to placing the male subject in his patrol vehicle for transport, the deputy conducted a search of his person for weapons and contraband. When the deputy checked the male’s right front pants pocket, the male immediately became noticeably nervous and repeatedly stated, “I don’t know what’s in there, I don’t know what’s in there. These aren’t pants.” Dominguez removed a lighter and a small cylindrical metal container commonly used to store medication. When the deputy opened the container, he observed a crystal-like rock substance inside.
Based on the deputy’s training and experience, he recognized the substances as being consistent with methamphetamine. The deputy immediately seized the substance.
After the search was complete, Dominguez placed the male subject in his patrol vehicle and transported him to the Jones County Jail. Once they arrived at the jail, Dominguez advised the male offender that he was being charged with possession of methamphetamine in addition to his outstanding warrant.
July 12
Overturned vehicle/DUI
Dep. Steib was dispatched to a single-vehicle accident involving an overturned vehicle with unknown injuries. Once the deputy arrived on scene, he observed a SUV overturned in the roadway, blocking both lanes of travel and causing the southbound lanes to be closed.
Steib made contact with the female driver and identified her. While checking on the driver’s welfare, the deputy noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her person and her eyes were very glossy. Steib asked the female driver if she was injured, and she advised that she was ok. The deputy then assisted with securing the scene and arranging for the vehicle to be moved from the roadway due to it blocking traffic. After the scene was secured, the deputy asked the female driver what happened. The female stated that she wasn’t sure what happened. Steib asked if she fell asleep behind the wheel, and she stated she believed she did. EMS arrived on scene and evaluated the female. After the assessment, one of the EMS personnel advised Steib that she had no apparent injuries, she refused to be transported to the hospital, and they detected a strong odor of alcohol on her person. After EMS released the female driver, Steib returned and asked her how much alcohol she had consumed.
The female advised the deputy that she had consumed four beers while celebrating her birthday at a bar in Macon. The female went on to say that after she left the bar, she went home and later received a phone call from her husband asking her to come pick him up from the same bar because he had drunk too much to drive. The female continued by stating she was then traveling northbound on Gray Hwy. and that was the last thing she remembered and did not know how her vehicle ended up overturned in the southbound lanes of Gray Hwy.
Dep. Dominguez administered the Standardized Field Sobriety Test. The female was unable to successfully complete the evaluation as instructed. The deputy then administered a Preliminary Breath Test, which indicated a breath alcohol concentration of 0.147.
Based on the deputy’s observations, the female’s admission to consuming alcoholic beverages, the odor of alcohol on her person, glossy eyes, her performance of the SFSTs, the PBT result and the circumstances of the crash, Steib placed the female under arrest for driving under the influence. Steib read the female Georgia Implied Consent Notice for suspects age 21 or over and the female consented to the state administered chemical test. The female was then transported to the Jones County Jail and issued a citation for driving under the influence.
