The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Jan. 6-12, 2023.
Jan. 9
Deputy Sullivan was in route to an unrelated call when he observed a vehicle weaving in and out of traffic. Sullivan ran the vehicle information, and it came back to show the vehicle had no insurance and suspended registration. The deputy conducted a traffic stop at this time. Sullivan made contact with the driver, and she gave him expired insurance information.
The deputy asked the driver how much marijuana was in the vehicle because he could smell it. The driver told Sullivan that it was not a lot of marijuana.
At that time, the driver was placed in handcuffs and Sullivan began to search the vehicle. The deputy found a backpack that contained a jar with a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, two rolled marijuana cigars, a digital scale and rolling papers, a red vape pen and an open bottle of vodka. The driver was transported to the Jones County LEC where she was charged with possession of marijuana less than one ounce, no insurance and suspended registration.
Jan. 10
Sgt. Little was on patrol in the area of Gray Highway near Joycliff Road when he observed a vehicle fail to maintain lane.
At this time, Little conducted a traffic stop. When Little made contact with the driver, he immediately noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Little had the driver exit from the vehicle. When the driver tried exiting the vehicle, he fell into Little’s arms and the sergeant had to catch him. Inv.
Hall arrived on scene to assist and had the passenger exit the vehicle. A probable cause search was done on the vehicle, but no contraband was found. The driver was arrested for DUI marijuana and transported to the Jones County Jail where he was given citations for failure to maintain lane and DUI.
Deputy Sullivan initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle after performing a routine registration check by running the license plate on the vehicle. The check came back to show the registration was valid, but the license plate information showed that the registered owner had a suspended license. When Sullivan made contact with the driver, the male subject told the deputy he was only driving due to his girlfriend, which was a passenger in the vehicle, having a headache. The driver was placed under arrest for driving while license suspended. Sgt.
Walker had arrived on scene to assist due to the smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Walker had the female passenger exit the vehicle to do a probable cause search due to the marijuana odor. Sullivan began to search the vehicle and found a plastic container that had a glass jar that had possible marijuana flakes and rolling papers inside. Sullivan also found a pill bottle containing approximately five Gabapentin pills inside a backpack in the vehicle. The female subject told Walker that her mother had given her a pill because she was hurting and then gave her a few to give her boyfriend (the driver of the vehicle) due to him having back pain. Sullivan advised the two subjects that he would be keeping the pills until he could verify with the mother that they were not stolen, and she gave permission for them to have them. The driver was transported to the Jones County LEC where he was issued a citation for driving while license suspended and turned over to jail staff for booking.
Jan. 11
Sgt. Humphries was informed of a stolen vehicle off Monticello Highway.
The vehicle was first noticed by the owner’s father who passed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Monticello Highway. He knew that his daughter was at work when he passed the vehicle and she advised no one was at the home at that time and that the keys to the vehicle were hanging on a keyboard inside the front door and the door was unlocked. The vehicle was eventually spotted by Jasper County and stopped by Putnam County units on Hwy. 441 at Monticello Road in Putnam County. The driver was taken into custody by a Putnam Deputy Sheriff.
