Gray Computers has been a staple of the Jones County community for almost two decades, helping people fix their computers and helping them stay safe while they use their various devices.
The business is located at 189 West Clinton Street in Gray, and is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Joe Rutledge, the owner of Gray Computers moved from Bibb County to Jones County years ago, He opened Gray Computers in 2007 and enjoys living in Gray with his family.
Rutledge said Gray Computers is important for Jones County, because he’s able to help people in the community who need their computers and devices fixed quickly for various reasons. He said they aren’t going to get a quick turn around by getting their computers fixed at places in Macon.
“We’re able to get things done faster, because we are focused mainly on helping Gray,” the owner said. “We are a small family-owned business, so we aren’t out here trying to do everything. I feel comfortable like this. I love operating in a small town like this, because it’s so much less stressful.”
Rutledge said some of the services they offer are repairs on desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, and more, upgrades and installs, networking solutions, custom PCs, and more.
The owner said the challenge of the growing numbers of scams and scammers has made it more difficult to operate and help people at Gray Computers. He has had to deal with that a lot.
“You can’t trust anything. These people are sending out notifications saying they are from these companies, saying someone has hacked into your account. Things were frustrating to begin with, now they are way more frustrating,” he said.
Rutledge said nothing is really being done about the scammers, so they just take any opportunity they can to trick people. He said they have a whole operation in other countries. He urged people not freak out if they get a notification that looks like it’s from their bank.
“The scammers want you to freak out and get you to click on the link they provide you,” he said. “Don’t do that.
The owner said the best thing people can do is have knowledge about the existence of scams.
“When you know, you can tell your family and friends about what is going on,” the owner said. “Keep this topic going, and don’t forget about it. Let people know what these scammers are doing. When these people send you something, read it slowly and don’t automatically click on links.”
Rutledge said people should choose Gray Computers, because they are honest and not trying to get rich. He said he will always give people an honest answer about what is going on with their device, and how much it will cost to fix it. The owner emphasized that Gray Computers is here for people in Jones County, and he wants to help them with their computer problems as best he can. Its importance for people to stay vigilant about the scams that are happening daily.
“We have been pleased to work here at Gray Computers and help the community,” he said. “We’ve learned how things go around this time of year, since we’ve been doing things so long. We love to work here, and I count my blessings that I am able to work here with the people of Gray.”
