The Gray Garden Club held their annual daylily display and sale at the W.E. Knox Civic Center on June 4.
Mary Musselman, Gray Garden Club display coordinator, said they used to have the Daylily Festival, and Gray was very popular for daylilies, so the Gray Garden Club wanted to carry the tradition on in some way. She said many people in the community love daylilies, so people enjoy coming to see them and purchase them.
“We had a daylily display, where people in the community brought their daylilies to be judged,” she said. “They brought them in during the morning, then we had the judging in the afternoon. It was open to the public, and there were some very beautiful daylilies.”
She said the mission of the Gray Garden Club is to beautify the community. She said they are a hands-on club, and she believes that the Gray Garden Club makes the community more beautiful.
“We sold plants and daylilies outside of the W.E. Knox Civic Center for the Gray Garden Club fundraiser. People should have come out to see the daylilies, because it shows people what kind of daylilies are available out there. There are plenty of people in Georgia who enjoy pretty flowers,” Musselman said.
Betty Davis, a judge for the display, said her favorite thing about judging the daylily display was seeing the variety of daylilies. She said it was an outstanding contest. She said there were different categories of daylilies at the event, such as named, unnamed, large, miniature, and more.
“We like to look at the form to see if it’s well formed. We look for blemishes and bugs, as well as unique form and colors,” the judge said. “This contest was important, because it shows you how many people in Jones County have daylilies they enjoy.”
Best in show unnamed winners for the daylily display are May Nelson who won first, Jean Favors and Greg Thompson who both won second and Ruth Hartzog who won third place. Best in show named winners are Jimmie Davis who won first, Sara Tidwell who won second and Greg Thompson who won third place. The sweepstakes winner was Jimmie Davis.
The Gray Garden Club has a Wild Adventure Day coming up on June 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., too. They will be doing hikes, nature painting, building birdhouses, environmental studies, and more. Space is limited, so they ask guardians with children ages 9 through 11 to call now if they want their child to participate. The event is $10 per camper, and they are asked to bring a sack lunch along. For more information, call Ruth Hartzog at 478-986-9656.
Musselman said she enjoyed seeing all the different varieties of daylilies at the display. She said there were so many different colors and shapes. She said she hopes everyone appreciated the flowers on display.
“We are glad to have new members for whoever wants to join. We meet the first Tuesday of every month, and right now we are meeting at Bradley Baptist Church.” the coordinator said. “It’s hard for working people to come since we meet during the day, but we would like anyone who loves working with flowers and plants such as daylilies.”
