A Macon man recently received a sentence of 15 years in Jones County Superior Court for drug and traffic charges.
Corey Lashon Willis was in court Jan. 5 to plead guilty to the charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and driving while license suspended. The sentences will run concurrently for a total of 15 years and may be served on probation.
The charges Willis faced in court were from a 2021 arrest. Apparently, he had been released on bond after the arrest and received a bench warrant when he did not show for court.
Willis was arrested again May 11, 2025, following a traffic stop for an expired registration and the felony bench warrant.
The report of the 2021 arrest by Jones County Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Travis Walker states he was on patrol on Highway 57 monitoring traffic when he saw a black Honda Accord speeding. The car was traveling 71 in a 55-mph zone.
Walker said he performed a traffic stop, and it appeared the driver was attempting to find a place to stop. The officer said during that time, he noticed two items coming out of the passenger-side window.
After the items were thrown out, the Honda pulled over, and he treated it as an ordinary stop. The driver was asked for his license and stated he was unlicensed.
Walker said he informed the driver, who was identified as Willis, the reason for the stop and how his speed was determined. Willis also told him the vehicle was not insured.
The driver was asked to get out of the car and checked for weapons. Walker said once backup arrived, Willis was handcuffed.
After the driver was in custody, the sergeant said he went back up the road to the place he saw the items thrown out of the car. Walker said the took the items back to where Willis was with the backup officers and informed him of what he found.
Walker had found a plastic bag with marijuana inside and another bag containing crack cocaine. During a search of the suspect, officers found two hydrocodone pills and $540 in cash. A search of the vehicle revealed MDMA ecstasy pills in a cup holder and more pills in a prescription bottle.
Willis was subsequently taken into custody, and the vehicle was towed to the impound yard.
