Jones County Arts receives grant to present Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr.

Jones County will hit the books when students from Jones County Arts teach history, grammar, and math through clever and tuneful songs in their production of Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR.

“Many of us remember Schoolhouse Rock as the Emmy Award-winning threeminute Saturday morning cartoon series that taught children how to unpack their adjectives, memorize the Preamble to the Constitution, and discover that ‘Three is a Magic Number.’ These episodes covered grammar, history, science, social studies, and math in such a fun manner that the series became a pop culture phenomenon. JCA students are bringing that same spirit of fellowship, excitement and curiosity to their stage production and are exploring school subjects in a whole new way while doing so.

Jones County Arts was awarded a Vibrant Communities grant from Georgia Council for the Arts, a strategic arm of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, to perform Schoolhouse Rock Live; an entertaining and educational show that teaches students and audiences of all ages that learning is fun. The Vibrant Communities Grant supports a variety of arts programming throughout the state, including murals, artist residencies and performances in schools, community theater productions, festivals, and concerts. Funding for these grants is provided through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly.

“Arts funding is crucial for the cultivation of vibrant, thriving communities, and Georgia Council for the Arts is excited to help our arts organizations achieve their mission, enhance downtowns, and support small businesses,” said Georgia Council for the Arts Director Tina Lilly. “We hear from grantees about how the investment of these dollars provides long-term benefits for organizations and communities, and we are grateful to the Georgia General Assembly for providing this support to improve quality of life across the state.”

JCA will present Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR. for the Jones County elementary schools on Jan. 11-12. There is a public performance at the W.E. Knox Civic Center Jan. 13 at 7 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased online at (booktix.net) $10 for adults and $8 for students or at the door before the performance.

“Schoolhouse Rock has been such a fun opportunity for me to learn songs I listened to as a child and now get to put it on stage for a young audience to enjoy,” said Addison Davis.

Laila Wright, who plays the teacher in the show said, “I love that we get an opportunity to revisit our childhood memories.” Lisa Mullis our director said, “I am excited to be able to present this show for our elementary students and share the musical arts live for them.

Most of our students do not get the opportunity to see a production in person and learn how we put on a show.”
