Grady Tyler is the local veteran of the week.
He went into the U.S.
Maritime Service at 16 years of age. He sailed on a liberty ship, working in the engine room on a four-hours-on/eighthours- off shift. His first trip was to Nova Scotia, Canada. He crossed the Atlantic with a convoy, hauling troops, vehicles, and airplanes. They took troops to Normandy beach and anchored out there for some time like sitting ducks, but they were lucky. After his USMS service, he spent three years in the U.S. Army, spending time with an occupational force on Okinawa.
