Calvin W. Avant is the local veteran of the week. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1969. After completing his basic training in San Diego, California, he was assigned to an aircraft carrier, the USS Hancock, where he served three tours in Vietnam as an AB3 petty officer third class. His primary responsibility included launching airplanes from the carrier; these planes were leaving for combat and surveillance missions in Vietnam. His ship was based in San Francisco, and he returned there at the end of his service. Mr. Avant always felt honored to serve his country.
