Hugh Baker is the local veteran of the week. He was born Aug.
14, 1916, in Cedeartown and was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force at Fort McPherson on Jan. 27, 1942. He did his basic training at Kessler Field, Mississippi, then was assigned to Fort Logan, Colorado for Air Force clerical school. From there, he was sent to Spokane, Washington and attached to a squadron of B-17 aircraft for training. He was then assigned to Ephrata Air Force Base, Washington; Sioux City Iowa; San Francisco, California; Oahu, Hawaii, where he was an engineering clerk with the 424th Heavy Bomb Squadron; Battle Creek, Michigan; Selfridge Field, Michigan; then to Daniel Field in Augusta.
He was discharged, then was with the National Guard as an administrative assistant for Service Company 121st Infantry Regiment until 1954. He died in September of 2004 in Gray.
