Thomas L. Collum is the local veteran of the week. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1942 to October 1945. He was a tech sergeant and received jungle combat training in Panama; he was also assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 81st Infantry, Pacific Command Headquarters in the Philippines. When the Philippines fell, he went to Australia to wait for the “Island Hopping Campaign.” He was in Luzon when Japan surrendered and took part in the occupation of Japan. He was discharged Oct. 30, 1945. Collum lived in Jones County from 1939 until his death in 2002.
