Dear Editor,
I would like for someone explain to myself and other taxpaying citizens of Jones County what justifies a salary of $62,878.40 per year plus a Jones County vehicle to travel back and forth to their home in Baldwin County 5 days a week which equates to 200 miles a week at taxpayers’ expense for the code enforcement officer that JC employs. My biggest concern is the question as to each complaint that I have filed I end up having to contact the commissioners for answers to get the problems solved. Curtis Barfield the former code enforcement officer told us all he was ever paid was $500 a month plus a vehicle. That’s a big, big difference in salary when the current salary is over $5000 a month. Everyone I’ve talked to this about says that current salary is ridiculous. If the commissioners have to get involved to solve so much of what the officers’ duties should be then why do we need this employee?
Also, the Code enforcement agency in both Bibb and Houston County have told me point blank after a citation is issued for violations the accused has 15 days to get the problem solved or they will take start legal proceedings. In Jones County it takes months and also you as a citizen of JC have to file each complaint yourself. As a code enforcement agent, the officer should not have to sit around and wait for you and I to file a complaint before they take action. Now in rebuttal I’m sure there will be an answer about the County vehicle having to be used in case of an accident that might need some sort of hazardous material investigated but several of our law enforcement officials have told me several times that they do not need this person out there at the scene getting in their way. If needed they can contact that officer.
