Library blossoms into spring

LOCAL LITERACY

The Jones County Public Library has a lot planned for April, and the staff are ready to welcome in guests this spring for all of the activities, programs and more.

Julie King, the branch manager at the Jones County Public Library, said she’s excited about the activities they can provide for the community this month.

“We have a lot going on the rest of this April, as we do every month here at the Jones County Public Library,” she said. “We have changed our Teacher Tuesdays to S.T.E.A.M. Kits, because it was too hard for the teachers to get here in the time frame that we had after school. It’s activities you do by hand, and that’s every Tuesday at 4 p.m. The next one will be April 18.”

She said Wiggle Worms is still Wednesdays at 10 a.m. She said that’s for zero through five years old. She said they do puppets, story time, activities, crafts, and more. She said they have Teen Coffee Corner Thursdays, and the next one will be April 20 at 4 p.m.

“We really just want to be a community center and open the library up to the community. The more people we can open up to, the more we can promote the love of reading to. We have so much to offer here at the library,” King said.

The branch manager said the next Jones County Friends of the Library book sale will be Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jones County Pre-K in building E. She said the Jones County Public Library has their Adult Art Class on Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. and their Teen Program Saturday, April 29 at 12 p.m. She said they will be making slime.

“Tuesday, April 25 we have a new program called the Graphic Novel Book Club, and that’s for our teenagers,” she said. “One of our employees has them read the graphic novel, then they make their own comic book. She helps them do that, and that’s the last Tuesday of every month at 4 p.m.”

King said they will have their Book to Movie Book Club for third through fifth graders on Friday, April 28 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. She said they will be watching Narnia this month, and the whole family is invited. She said JACOR will be doing their Financial Freedom seminar at 11 a.m. at the library, and it is for teenagers and adults.

“We are waiting to hear about our outdoor reading area; it is supposed to be coming in soon. We have been waiting on the rain to let up. We are very excited for that, so we can read outdoors,” King said.

She said summer reading will start in June, and the theme is All Together Now: Kindness, Friendship and Unity.

She said part of the library will be Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, because he was always such a kind person. She said to check out the Jones County Library Facebook page for the summer reading program schedule and what they have planned.

“Everything we do here is free, all of the clubs, programs and classes. A lot of it is sponsored by the clubs and organizations in Jones County,” she said.

“We are grateful for the support. We are able to do what we do thanks to the community and those who step up.”

The branch manager said people know the Jones County Library is a safe place for people to be and to have wholesome fun.

She said it is a place for the community. She said she wants people to have a love for the library, so it can blossom into a love for reading.

“Just knowing that the kids have something to do here is probably my favorite thing about spring and spring break here at the library. They are always welcome,” King said. “There is always so much to do here. Anyone who comes to the library will know they are loved.

My staff is so engaging, and that’s what makes it the success that it is.”
