Library celebrates love and Black history

LOCAL LITERACY

The Jones County Library has lots going on for the month of February filled with love, knowledge and books.

Julie King, the branch manager of the Jones County Library, said she’s excited for the month and all they have planned at the library.

“Valentine’s Day is this month, so we have the library all decorated up for that. February is also Black History Month, so we have a big display set up for that,” she said. “We have lots of activities here at the Jones County Library like we always do, so people should stop by and see what’s going on sometime.”

She said Wiggle Worms will still be every Wednesday for zero through five-year-olds with lots of activities going on. She said Brunch Buddies will take place Feb. 12 at 10:30 a.m. and anyone can come. She said it’s a good time to enjoy each other’s company.

“I love Black History Month and promoting it, because there is such a rich history to be talked about and learned. We have a lot of books by black authors for patrons to check out. I love Valentine’s Day too, because we are all about loving each other here at the library,” King said.

The branch manager said the Teen Cafe will be on the first and third Thursday after school hours. The next Teen Cafe will be Feb. 15 at 3:30 p.m. She said there will be games and activities for the teens to do.

“We have our Stitch ‘n’ Such club on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m,” she said. “We are going to have this club meet twice a month starting in March. We have a group of ladies who come and crotchet, knit and bring different sewing things to talk about. We love the program.”

She said the adult art class will meet Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. They will be decorating mugs this month, so they can decorate them for Valentine’s Day or however they want.

King said The Jones County Friends of the Library will have their monthly used book sale Saturday, Feb. 10 starting at 10 a.m. She said the Teen Program at the Jones County Public Library will be on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 12 p.m. and they will be doing a virtual escape room activity.

“The first and the second Saturday of this month we are having a Beginning Beekeeping program here at the library. This has been one of the most signed up for events I’ve seen here. There’s so much interest in this program that we will have another one in the fall,” she said.

The branch manager said they are already getting ready for summer reading, so people should be prepared for a lot of fun. She said the theme this year for summer reading will be adventure.

She said reading enhances everything in life, so people should definitely know how to read. She said to do just about anything people have to know how to read. She said reading opens up an entire world, too.

“Our biggest thing is literacy, so we do all of these programs and activities to get people interested in reading,” King said. “Our main focus all along has been to help people learn to read, to help our children learn to read and help people experience the joy of reading.”

The library is located at 146 Railroad Street in Gray. Visit the Jones County Library Facebook page for more information and updates of activities or call 478-986-6626.
