The decision not to wear a seat belt proved costly for a Florida woman who is now facing drug charges following a routine traffic stop.
Randi Michael Sheesley, 35, was arrested Jan. 18 and charged with two counts of possession of Schedule I drugs, possession of Schedule II narcotics and possession and use of drug-related objects.
A report of the arrest by Gray Police Officer Josh Josey stated he observed the driver of a silver Mazda SUV pass the area of Highview Street not wearing a seatbelt while he was monitoring traffic on West Clinton Street about 4 p.m.
Josey said he fell in behind the Mazda to perform a traffic stop.
The Mazda pulled into the parking lot of a local restaurant.
The officer said he identified himself as he approached the vehicle and identified the driver. Josey said he asked her to exit the SUV and then informed her he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
He said Sheesley told him the smell was because her husband smokes marijuana for medical reasons. Josey subsequently searched the vehicle and found a zipper bag in the console containing mushrooms and a vape box with empty cartridges.
The driver said she did not know anything about the mushrooms other than she ordered them on the internet.
A continued search found a small backpack that contained more vapes and a plastic baggy of a white, powdery substance. All the items were placed on the hood of the officer’s patrol car.
The car and a nineyear- old child, who was a passenger in the car, were turned over to a family member. Sheesley was taken into custody and transported to the Jones County Law Enforcement Center.
Josey said he went to the Gray Police Department and performed a field test on the white, powdery substance, which tested positive for cocaine. He said all the evidence was packaged and logged into evidence and warrants taken for Sheesley’s arrest.
