Qualifying for this year’s city election next week

ELECTION 2025

Qualifying for the City of Gray’s election of mayor and council members will take place next week with more than one newcomer anticipated to be in the race.

The dates for qualifying are Aug. 19-21, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Candidates may pick up their paperwork to fill out at Gray City Hall, the same place they will turn in the completed forms and qualifying fees.

The election for City of Gray elected officials will be held Nov. 4.

The approved qualifying fees are $216 for mayor, $198 for mayor pro tem and $162 for each of the four council seats.

Two incumbents have announced they are running for re-election. James Collins announced last week he will be seeking reelection for mayor pro tem, and Mayor Ed Barbee’s announcement is in this week’s edition. The newcomer, Natalie Lurie, announced her plan to run for the District 3 council seat, also last week.

Former Councilman Benny Gray resigned from his District 2 seat in February and passed away in May. Gray served as councilman for 35 years.

The vacancy in District 2 all but guarantees there will be at least one new council person for the term that will begin in 2026.
