Real Life

–George Sheffield “I and my Father are one.“ (Jn 10:30) So many people refuse to accept that Jesus is God.

A prophet, yes. A miracle worker, yes. But God, no!

They just can’t wrap their minds around the truth that Jesus is God, God the Son, God in the flesh.

But Jesus says He and the Father are one.

This doesn’t mean that Jesus and the Father are the same Person. The Godhead (Acts 17:29) is one God composed of three Persons--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. What Jesus is saying is that the Father and Son are equal in nature and in essence, in being God. Jesus is as much God as the Father is, and as the Holy Spirit is.

Yes, Jesus is God Almighty. The Jews (the religious leaders) listening to Him knew exactly what He was saying, that He was claiming deity. Equality with God. In v31, they took up stones to kill Him and Jesus asked why they wanted to stone Him. They replied, “because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God” (v33). But God He is.

Why is it important to know Jesus is God? The blood. His blood shed on the cross was God’s pure, holy blood (Acts 20:28), free from any stain of sin. If Jesus had been just a man, His blood would have been sin corrupted and unfit for a sacrifice to wash sin away. God took on flesh to shed His holy blood to redeem sinful man.
