Real Life

“And He (Jesus) said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer“(Lk 22:15) Jesus desired to eat the Passover with His disciples before His arrest. He had eaten other Passovers with them, but this Passover was special. It would be His last Passover. Even more, it would be the Final Passover to be celebrated. After this Passover, any future Passovers were null and void. The Passover ended with Jesus that night in the upper room.

The Passover was a memorial to God’s deliverance of the Hebrews from Egyptian slavery, but it was also a picture God’s perfect Lamb to come to take away the sin of the world. When the Lamb of God was sacrificed, that ended the Passover and all animal sacrifices, because Jesus, our Passover Lamb, now delivers people from the slavery of sin. The Passover created by God in Ex 12, would now be retired by God Incarnate in the upper room.

But Jesus did leave us with a new Passover--the Lord’s Supper, Communion. Jesus never told His disciples to do the Passover in remembrance of Him; He told them to do Communion in remembrance of Him. Communion is the new Passover of the New Covenant in His blood.
