Veterans 5K to kickoff this year’s Spring Festival

MAIN STREET GRAY

The Main Street Gray Hometown Spring Festival scheduled later this month has added a new event, a 5K race that had previously been held in November.

The Col. Allen Carr 5K Race is set to kick off the April 25 festival at 9 a.m. Race day registration will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. at the W.E. Knox Civic Center located on West Clinton Street. Capt. Michael McMillan said the Jones County High School JROTC is hard at work to make sure the event is a success.

The Carr 5K has been the kickoff event for Jones County’s Veterans Appreciation Day until a scheduling issue cancelled it last November. McMillan said adding the race to the Spring Festival is a good fit.

The 5K welcomes runners of all ages and experience levels, offering both individual and group registration options. McMillan said he encourages early registration with an April 7 deadline to guarantee a commemorative event T-shirt.

He said limited shirts will be offered on race day while supplies last.

The website to register for the race is forms. office.com/r/siVP9Dyc5H or the QR code at right can be scanned.

Standard registration is $25 per person. Teams and families of four or more can register at a discounted rate of $20 per person. Additional reduced pricing is available for K-12 students, educators, school staff, first responders and military personnel.

Participants will be competing for a variety of awards, including overall male and female winners. Awards are also given for top male and female veterans, to masters division finishers in addition to the top three finishers in standard age groups.

Teams will also receive awards.

McMillan said the 5K is the beginning of a full day of entertainment. The festival begins at 10 a.m. featuring music, food vendors, arts and craft vendors, a kids fun zone in addition to downtown businesses.

Registration is available online and the day of the race. For answers to any race questions, email McMillan at jchsjrotc@jones.k12.ga.us.

“Join us in launching what we hope will become one of Gray’s signature Spring events.”
