Charlie Kirk’s brutal murder has shaken us all and, if it didn’t, that is scary, too. We cannot be immune to an unhinged murder that is shown repeatedly on social media and took place in front of 3000 young people. We cannot be immune to a young man whose message was “Let’s talk” being gunned down for someone “hating his ideas.” We cannot be immune to the exaggeration and misinformation spread by news vehicles for those who do not agree with his party. We cannot be immune to those who act like school children, “Well there have been murders of democrats too, so it’s not as bad as you think.” It IS as bad as we think. Charles Person, one of the 60s Freedom Riders, spoke of being shocked by “the hate in people’s eyes.” We are all shocked by the widespread political hate evidenced by this murder. When MLK and RFK were shot, people banded together. Here people take partisan sides. Some good has come out: TurningPointhas added 33,000 colleges who want chapters on their campuses. There has been a rise in Christianity with students. Charlie’s wife tells their daughter, “Dad is on a business trip with Jesus.” The response to the murder has been hundreds of thousands of candlelight vigils and still counting, not antifa and riots. He believed “When you stop talking, that is when violence occurs.” When you’re with your friends and family, let’s talk lovingly.
