Flu Season

Dear Editor,

As we approach flu season, Jones County Health Department would like to emphasize the importance of influenza vaccinations and how they play a crucial role in safeguarding our health and the well-being of our community.

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can lead to severe complications, especially for young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with certain underlying health conditions. The flu not only puts individuals at risk but also has the potential to strain our healthcare system, leading to increased hospitalizations and, in severe cases, fatalities.

The flu season in Georgia begins in early October and can run as late in the year as May. With such a long window of opportunity for contracting the influenza virus, the flu is regarded as one of the most common illnesses. The best way to protect yourself and others from the flu is through vaccination. Flu shots are a safe and effective measure to prevent the flu. A few key reasons why getting vaccinated is so important include:

• PreventionofIllness:Thefluvaccinesignificantly reduces the risk of contracting the flu. Even if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can lessen the severity of the illness and help you recover more quickly.

• CommunityProtection:Vaccinationhelpsprotect those who cannot be vaccinated, such as infants under six months of age and individuals with certain medical conditions. By reducing the number of people who get sick, we also help prevent the spread of the virus to more vulnerable members of our community.

• ReducedHealthcareBurden:Bypreventingflu-related illnesses, the vaccine helps reduce the number of visits to healthcare providers and emergency rooms, which is especially important during peak flu season.

• EconomicBenefits:Flushotscanreduceabsenteeism from work and school, and help minimize the economic impact of flu-related illnesses on families and businesses.

Let’s work together to keep our community healthy this flu season. By getting vaccinated, you’re not only protecting yourself but also contributing to the overall health and safety of those around you.

Please call The Jones County Health Department at 478-986-3164 to schedule your flu shot today.

September 11

Dear Editor,

September 11 is a day that most of us remember as one of sorrow and horror. So many lives taken, so many lives shattered, so many lives forever changed. That day displayed the courage and selflessness of so many who responded to the shocking and horrific needs of that day.

On that day we witnessed the true heroism and sacrifice of the First Responders who answered the call on that day of terror. Many gave their lives that day trying to meet the critical needs of strangers. Others still suffer from the debilitating effects from the dust and chemical exposure surrounding them on that day.

These heroes deserve our deepest respect and appreciation. Answering the call of the unknown, with no regard for themselves, is what these men and women do every single day. It is not just a job to them; it is a duty. Some of these heroes work by the clock with days off to be home and enjoy family or a favorite pastime.

Others commit to signing up for whatever needs our nation has, which includes leaving home for extended periods of time, possibly facing wartime, and some even pay the ultimate sacrifice.

Our duty is to support and pray for these heroes and their families. That is what we will do on Wednesday, September 11, at Carol’s Park from 11:00 – 2:00, by offering a free lunch for our local First Responders and Military. This is a drop-in time of appreciation, with a time of prayer and decrees at 12:00 noon.

The community is invited to attend and join us in personally thanking these individuals for their many sacrifices for the people of Jones County and America.

PLEASE, help us get the word out to our local First Responders and Military. JOIN US to honor them on this day.

Sincerely, Debra Hall & Team KBOMIN
