The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Sept. 19-20, 2025.
Sept. 19
Weight restriction
Capt. Hunnicutt was patrolling the area of the Crossing when he observed an 18-wheeler traveling on Eatonton Hwy. towards West Clinton St. Hunnicutt pulled in behind the truck and activated his blue lights. The driver of the 18-wheeler then pulled over on the side of the roadway.
Hunnicutt made contact with the male driver and advised him the reason for the stop was for weight restrictions. Hunnicutt asked the male driver for his license and the male handed the captain an Illinois driver’s license. Hunnicutt checked the driver through the GCIC system, and it came back to show that the driver’s license was currently suspended. Hunnicutt then had the male driver step out of the truck and searched the driver for contraband and for officer safety. Hunnicutt handcuffed the male driver and advised him he was being placed under arrest for driving while license suspended. Hunnicutt issued the driver citations for driving while license suspended and weight restrictions. Officer Joiner transported the male to the Jones County LEC. Officer Joiner advised Capt. Hunnicutt that the male driver refused to sign the citations. Hunnicutt advised the jail staff that the male driver would need to post a bond before being released.
Sept. 20
Vehicle crash – DUI
Dep. Robinson was dispatched to the area of Stonewall Dr. in reference to a vehicle crash.
Upon arrival, EMS was on scene and Robinson saw the vehicle in the ditch on the left side of the roadway. Robinson approached the vehicle and observed a male leaning over the passenger side door of the vehicle. The male was breathing and appeared to be asleep. Rescue advised Robinson that they have talked to the male and got him to open his eyes and they were able to get him out of the vehicle. Robinson then spoke to the male subject and noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the male’s person. The male’s eyes were watery and bloodshot, and he was unsteady on his feet.
Robinson asked the male driver if he had taken any medication or had any alcoholic beverages.
The male stated he had drank two beers. The deputy asked the male if he would perform the standardized field sobriety test and the male complied.
Robinson noted several clues during the test. The deputy had to correct the male subject several times during the exam.
After the test, Robinson asked the male if he would blow into the roadside alco-sensor and the male gave his consent. The alcosensor showed a high positive for alcohol on his breath. The male driver told Robinson that he had his last drink about an hour or two prior to the crash.
EMS cleared the male subject from any issues due to the crash.
Robinson then read the male the implied consent notice for suspects aged 21 or over and asked for the chemical testing of his breath. Lt. Ransom arrived on scene to assist. Robinson asked Lt. Ransom if he could run the Intox 9000 test at the office, and he agreed. The male subject was placed in handcuffs and Lt.
Ransom transported him to the Jones County LEC. Robinson was still on the scene and took photographs of the vehicle. He observed an open Bud Light beer in the console along with an open 12 pack of Bud Light which was missing three cans. Once the vehicle was removed from the scene, Robinson went to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office to meet with the male subject and issued his citations. The male driver was charged with DUI less safe alcohol and failure to maintain lane.
