NATIONAL SIGNING DAY

COLLEGE COMMITMENTS

Williams, Robinson, Jenkins and Brock celebrate college signings

For a quartet of Jones County High School student-athletes, last Wednesday’s gathering in the JCHS Gymnasium was centered around celebrating an exciting chapter of what’s to come in the very near future.

Their paths may be diverging in varying directions, but for cross country runners Shaun Williams and Gavin Robinson, softball’s Ella Jenkins and football’s Travis Brock, the common thread is that each of them will be continuing their athletic careers on the collegiate level.

All of that was celebrated in the midst of the gym last week with each taking part in a ceremonial event flanked by family, coaches, friends and others looking on.

Williams and Robinson’s cross country exploits have helped the Greyhounds boys team win four region championships in a row as well as last month’s third-place finish in the state, the best state meet showing in school history. The next path of their career will keep them very close to home, running for the Bobcats. GCSU is coming off a season where it finished ninth at the NCAA regionals, its best result there since 2018.

Jenkins was a second-team all-region softball selection for the Lady Greyhounds this past fall as a second baseman as Jones County contended for first place in a hotly contested region. She will next head to Brewton-Parker, whose in-state foes for next season include Middle Georgia State, Wesleyan, ABAC, South Georgia College, Point, and Georgia Gwinnett College.

Brock played an important part in laying the foundation for the new-look Greyhounds this past season, helping to establish culture and identity that’s expected to resonate for years to come. Brock now gets a chance to take the work ethic of being a Greyhound of Lyon, a Division III program in Batesville, Ark., that competes in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
