Man survives being struck by train while walking

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT

A Jones County man survived being hit by train while on a walk with his dog not far from his home.

A report of the incident by Jones County Deputy Thomas Sullivan states he was dispatched to the area of Griswoldville Road and the railroad tracks a few minutes after 2 p.m. Dec. 21. He said the call was in reference to a pedestrian struck by a train.

Sullivan said the train was stopped in the area of Jones Crossing, and the pedestrian was hit directly behind 200 Parker Drive. When the deputy got to the scene, he made contact with two railroad employees who directed him to the location of the victim.

One of the first things he noticed when headed in the direction of the train was a brown dog, deceased on the track under a train car. Sullivan said he continued and found a black male on the tracks under another train car.

The deputy said the victim was alive but not able to speak. He said EMS arrived soon after and began loading the injured man onto a backboard for transport. Sullivan said he was able to retrieve the victim’s foot to be taken with him to the hospital at the request of EMS.

The deputy said after the male subject was transported, he found the victim’s phone and was able to use it to identify him as Quintez Hargrove. He also confirmed Hargrove’s address and went to the home to notify his family of the situation.

The deputy said a neighbor came over and took the family members to the hospital.

Sullivan said he returned to the accident scene and was there when the district manager with the railroad’s investigations arrived. He said after the train was cleared to move, he was able to walk the tracks and found more of Hargrove’s belongings.

The deputy said he checked with medical staff several times about Hargrove’s condition and was told he was in critical but stable condition. He also went to the hospital later to check on the family.
