With seeding no longer a question for the Lady Greyhounds, the task at hand to close out the regular season is to finish strong before the region tournament, in which Jones County will begin play in next week’s later rounds.
“You want to have a sense of confidence and put self-doubt in other teams’ heads,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Takeo Gray said. “In this tournament, you want to need to go in playing well.”
Leading into this past Tuesday’s regular-season finale against Union Grove, Jones County took care of that stated goal, handling Hampton 65-45 and ELCA 66-40.
Of course, the region tournament goal is to get revenge on Woodland in next Friday’s region tournament title after the two teams split matchups in the regular season. But the close-out to the regular season also serves a key point of emphasis — to ensure that the Lady Greyhounds are firing on all cylinders heading to a time of the season when affairs matter the most.
“That’s the big thing. We want to get in a habit of making good decisions and executing, both on offense and defense,” Gray said, JCHS may have started slow against Hampton, leading 14-13 through a quarter. But the game did not end that way as a 32-21 halftime lead paved the way to a 20-point win as three Lady Hounds scored in double figures, led by Kamiyah Adams’ 21 points, 17 from Liberty Pennamon and 14 by Aubrey Norris.
Adams and Norris played prominent roles in the win against ELCA with 24 and 15 points. But Adams’ night was more than that, as a nineround effort was outdone only by 13 by way of Desirae Dumas.
