With one senior and at least two freshmen expected to contribute early, in-game varsity experience is something that the Greyhounds are short on in the early throes of the season.
But Jones County is countering that in a big way, as new head coach Clark Sweatt knows more than plenty about this current group of Greyhounds.
Sweatt was offered the head coaching position last spring, taking the helm of a program he has played a part in the past few years. He has played a key role on the grassroots, having been at Gray Station Middle School for the last four years. That was preceded by one year at Jasper County and a year in Jones County as community coach while in college.
“It’s good because I know them,” Sweatt said. “I know what to expect from them. They know me already. I love these guys; all of this, it’s for them.”
That getting to work begins right away for Jones County. After this Thursday’s home opener against Jasper County, the Greyhounds host Eastside and GMC Prep next Tuesday and Thursday. After hosting Mary Persons on Feb. 24, the Greyhounds open region play Feb. 27 against Ola.
“They know we have to get to work. It’s a tough region,” Sweatt said. “We’ll have to have some people step up. We’ll have at least two freshmen travel with us to start the year, and we hope to have more step up and play a factor later in the year.”
