The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Jan. 24-29, 2026
Jan. 24
Marijuana and felony warrants
Officer Holloway was patrolling the area of West Clinton St. and Jackson Ave. when he observed a vehicle with a driver’s side headlight out. The officer activated his blue lights and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. Holloway made contact with the male driver and four male passengers. While the officer was speaking with the driver, he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle. Holloway returned to his patrol car and ran the driver’s information through the GCIC system and also called for Officer Joiner for assistance on scene.
Once Officer Joiner arrived on scene, Holloway had the driver step out of the vehicle and asked him if there was any marijuana inside the vehicle. The male stated “no” but then pulled two small cellophane baggies out of his front pocket with a green leafy substance inside believed to be marijuana. Holloway then had the front seat male passenger, and the two rear seat male passengers to exit the vehicle. Holloway asked each subject if there was anything illegal, guns, knives, etc. inside the vehicle and they all stated no. Officer Holloway advised the occupants that he was going to perform a probable cause search of the vehicle due to the odor of marijuana. During the vehicle search, Holloway located a cup with an alcoholic beverage inside in the center console cup holder and another cup with an alcoholic beverage in the passenger side front cup holder. There was also an open container of alcohol and a loaded 40 cal. pistol located in a black backpack with the male passenger’s wallet inside in the rear seat. Another open bottle of alcohol was located in a black duffle bag in the rear seat of the vehicle. The firearm information came back showing no records.
Holloway then allowed all the passengers to get back inside the vehicle and had the male driver perform a series of standardized field sobriety test due to finding the open containers. The SFST came back showing little to no impairment and a breath sample came back as being under the legal limit. After performing the SFST on the driver, Holloway ran all the other occupant’s information through the GCIC system, and it came back to show one of the rear seat passengers had felony warrants out for parole violation.
The male was asked to step back out of the vehicle and Officer Joiner placed him in handcuffs and took him into custody.
Officer Holloway then placed the male driver in handcuffs and transported him to the Jones County LEC.
Jan. 28
No cell phone while driving
Officer Pointer was on routine patrol when he observed the driver of a vehicle talking on his cell phone while driving. Pointer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. As Pointer was getting out of his patrol vehicle, the male driver was also getting out of his vehicle. Pointer advised the male subject to get back in the vehicle multiple times before the subject complied. The officer then asked the male driver for his license and the male stated he did not have it. Pointer advised the male he was stopped for being on his cell phone. Pointer had dispatch run the driver’s information through the GCIC system. Dispatch then advised Pointer with an officer alert tone that the male driver was wanted. At that time, Pointer placed the male in handcuffs and allowed the driver to contact a friend to come get his vehicle. The officer then transported the male driver to the Jones County LEC where he was issued a citation for suspended license and a warning for unlawful use of a wireless device.
Jan. 29
Giving false information
Dep. Ribeiro initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of New Clinton and Joycliff due to the tag light not working on the vehicle. Ribeiro made contact with the male driver and female passenger then explained the reason for the stop.
The deputy asked the driver for his license and at that time, the female passenger gave the deputy her license. The driver only provided Ribeiro with a name and date of birth. Ribeiro went back to his patrol vehicle and ran the driver’s information, and nothing came back. The deputy then went back to the vehicle and asked the male driver for his name and date of birth again with a different date of birth. The deputy found no results on the information. Ribeiro then went back to the vehicle and advised the male driver to step out of the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs. The deputy advised the male that he was going to be detained until he could figure out who he was. The male subject finally gave Ribeiro his name and date of birth again. When the deputy ran the information, he did get a valid return, however, the name and date of birth was not the subject Ribeiro had in front of him. The male driver was arrested and transported to the Jones County Jail. Once at the jail, the deputy logged into the fingerprint system and identified the male subject. It also showed that the male was wanted by Houston County. A warrant was obtained for giving false name and date of birth as well as driving on a suspended license.
