The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department March 7-25, 2026
March 20
You’re not home
Dep. Steib was responding to a trespassing call on Upper River Rd. When the deputy arrived at the location, he observed a vehicle parked in the yard. The vehicle appeared to be unoccupied however, the interior lights were on, and the rear lights were illuminated as if the vehicle was in reverse. As the deputy approached the vehicle, he noticed a female unconscious and slumped over the steering wheel. The vehicle was running and in reverse. Steib immediately notified dispatch and requested EMS to respond to his location.
The deputy tried to get a response from the female by calling out to her and checking for a pulse. When the deputy checked her pulse, the female became alert and startled.
The deputy asked the female if she knew where she was and she thought she was at home. Steib informed the female that she was not at home and that she was on the side of the road in her vehicle.
Steib asked the female where she was coming from, and she stated Fitzgerald. The deputy then asked if she had consumed any alcohol or was taking any medication and the female advise that she has not had anything to drink. Steib noticed while speaking to the female that her speech was slurred. The deputy advised the female to put the vehicle in park, turn it off and step out of the car. As the female was getting out of the vehicle, she was unable to maintain her balance without stumbling, so the deputy had her sit down to keep from falling.
While continuing the investigation, Steib observed an empty bottle of Seagram’s Vodka on the passenger side floorboard. Fire Rescue arrived on scene and Steib advised this was a possible DUI, and they began their medical assessment of the female.
Steib asked the female again how much she had to drink, and the female picked up another bottle of alcohol that the deputy had not seen, and it was approximately half empty. At that time, Dep. Elliot arrived on scene to assist. EMS evaluated the female and advised that she checked out normal. EMS also stated the female told them she had been at a bar prior to being found. Steib asked the female if she would be willing to perform a field sobriety test and she agreed. That was the moment that the deputy was able to smell the odor of alcohol on her breath. Steib began the test and the female had difficulty performing the test. The female was then asked to blow into a portable breath test and was not able to give an adequate sample as at one point she sucked in air rather than blowing. At that time, the female was placed under arrest. While the female was being apprehended, she dropped to the ground and stated she could not go to jail. Steib read the female the implied consent and she initially refused and was transported to the jail at that time. Once they arrived at the jail the deputy spoke to the female again and reread implied consent. The female agreed to comply. A nurse was called to do the blood draw but was not able to get the sample. The female was cited for DUI and open container.
Non-compliant
Dep. Tarver was observing traffic on Bill Conn Pkwy when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed with no headlights on. As Tarver continued to watch the vehicle, he saw the driver come up very close to a vehicle that was turning in front of it. The driver almost struck the vehicle in front of him, slammed on brakes and swerved to avoid striking the turning vehicle. While trying to avoid contact with the vehicle in front, and swerving to miss contact, the vehicle traveled off the roadway and onto the grass. Then the vehicle attempted to get back on the roadway and over corrected his vehicle swerving into oncoming traffic. The driver overcorrected again and began fishtailing. Tarver caught up to the vehicle at the four-way intersection of Railroad St. and Bill Conn Pkwy. with blue lights and siren activated. Dep.
Braziel and Lt. Johnson arrived on scene just as Tarver and the driver of the vehicle came to a stop. Tarver exited his patrol vehicle and advised the male driver to exit the vehicle and walk back to him. The male driver seemed to have difficulty walking towards the deputy. Once the male got close to the deputy, Tarver could smell the odor of alcohol on the male’s breath. The deputy asked the male driver if he had consumed any alcohol, and the male very passive aggressively stated he did not consume any alcohol. Tarver then asked the male to submit to a Standardized Field Sobriety test and the male stated he would. The male subject had difficulty performing the test and became non-compliant, so the test was terminated, and the male driver was placed under arrest for suspicion of driver under the influence of alcohol. As Dep. Braziel and Tarver were trying to cuff the male driver, he was moving his hands away from the cuffs. The male was read the Georgia Implied Consent and he consented to blood testing. The male subject was transported to the Jones County Jail. During the transport, the male subject got very emotional. Tarver asked the Jailers to meet him at the door of the jail in case the male became aggressive. When the male subject was being taken out of the patrol vehicle, he became combative and yelled racial slurs at the jailers. The male resisted being moved into the jail and further resisted going into a holding cell. The male subject continued to yell and curse while fighting against jailers and the deputy. Eventually the male was placed in the cell awaiting the on-call nurse for a blood draw. When the nurses arrived, the male subject refused blood testing. The male subject was charged with reckless driving, obstruction of law enforcement officers, following too close and failure to maintain lane.
March 23
Suspicious man
Lt. Carr was dispatched to an address in reference to a suspicious male only wearing shorts trying to get in a residence. Once the complainant called 911 the subject walked off and over to another street. Another resident stated that the male subject sat on her porch and appeared to be hiding from something or someone.
When the resident advised the male subject she called 911, he again took off on foot and into the woods. The resident stated that the male subject did not seem medically ok and appeared to be out of it. At that time, Carr called for the rest of the K9 units to meet him at the location for a dog tracking. K9 Mako was deployed and led the officers to the male subject hiding in a bin in the middle of the woods. The male was detained and identified. Dispatch alerted that the male had an active probation warrant out of Jones County for his arrest.
The male was transported to the Jones County LEC and turned over to jail staff.
March 25
Violation of weight restrictions
Officer Pointer was patrolling the area of the Crossing when he observed a semi in violation of the City’s weight restriction ordinance. Pointer got behind the truck and conducted a traffic stop. Pointer made contact with the male driver and the driver advised he had just picked up the trailer and was heading home to Wilkinson Co. The male driver gave Pointer his license and when the officer checked the GCIC system, it came back to show the male had an active warrant for his arrest out of Stockbridge, GA. The male subject was then placed in handcuffs and allowed to call a family member to pick his truck up. Dispatch advised Pointer that the warrant was valid, and Stockbridge wanted to place a hold on the male. The male subject was then transported to the Jones County Jail and turned over to jail staff for his warrant. The male was not charged with the weight restriction violation.
