A vehicle driving at a high rate of speed in the dark, without lights, got the attention of a law enforcement, and more bad decisions led to the driver’s arrest on multiple charges.
Christopher Lee Avery, 28, was arrested March 20 and charged with reckless driving, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, DUI, following too closely and failure to maintain lane.
A report of the arrest by Jones County Deputy Jacob Tarver stated he was observing traffic at 7:40 p.m. on Bill Conn Parkway when he saw a GMC Sierra Traveling at a high rate of speed with no headlights illuminated.
Tarver said the vehicle gained on and almost struck another car that was making a left turn. He said the Sierra travelled off the road and on the grass for 50 feet to avoid the collision, then overcorrected and began fishtailing.
The deputy said he caught up to the Sierra and preformed a traffic stop. Tarver said he gave the driver instructions to exit the vehicle. The driver complied but appeared to have difficulty walking toward him.
Tarver said the driver was identified as Avery. The deputy said he smelled the odor of alcohol, and the driver’s speech was slurred.
Avery submitted to a field sobriety test and was taken into custody.
Tarver said during the drive to the Jones County Law Enforcement Center, the offender became emotional. The deputy said Avery resisted being moved into the jail. He said Avery fought with both him and the jailers but eventually was safely placed into the holding cell.
