Barring the very unexpected, the Greyhounds will find themselves fourth in the region after all region contests wrap up this week.
So, with a first-round series next week likely at Blessed Trinity awaiting April 21-22, there’s not much for Jones County to do than work on itself and do all possible to go into the postseason clicking as smoothly as possible. The Diamond Hounds wrapped up region play on Wednesday of this week against ELCA.
The Greyhounds, who play at Houston County Friday, kept that mindset going this past Friday when Glynn Academy came to town with a lineup that included one LSU commitment and another that drew in-person interest from multiple MLB scouts. The Red Terrors pushed two runs across in the sixth and seventh innings to win 6-1.
“Before the game even started, we talked about how we were coming in playing with house money,” Greyhounds head coach Noble Coley said. “You don’t have to worry about region rankings. You get to go play a good team and just play baseball without stressing about where I wind up in the region or worry about that.”
In a low-scoring contest through the first few frames, Jones County trailed 2-0 through the middle of the fourth inning before Cooper Rice’s RBI single. Rice, who had two hits and a double for Jones County on Friday, limited the Red Terrors to two hits through the game’s first three innings before giving way to Trent Paulk and Landen Wilson.
Paulk gave up the game’s first run in the fourth as a baserunner, reaching on an error and going on to score, but was able to pitch out of the inning from there, forcing Glynn Academy to strand a runner in scoring position.
“A few weeks ago, that run off an error is something that could have gotten away from us,” Coley said. “We did a good job of bouncing back from it.”
JCHS also had hits on Friday from Davis Upshaw and Nate Vaughn.
