Lady Hounds conclude best two-year run in program history

Riddled by a pair of surrendered goals in the first 15 minutes of the match, the Lady Greyhounds saw their season come to an end Thursday, losing 4-0 to Centennial in the opening round of the GHSA Class AAAA state tournament.

After all of the dust had settled, following emotional embraces between the Lady Greyhounds seniors and coaches, Jones County’s players made their way to the locker room — but also after a season in which Jones County forged its way into uncharted territory, winning the program’s first region title.

“A lot of their greatest accomplishments won’t be on this field. I wish they would have had more, I wish we would have gone further, of course,” Lady

the ball during Thursday’s first-round loss to Centennial.

BRAD HARRISON/ Staff Greyhounds head coach Mikayla Coley said. “But all of them have a lot of bright things going for their future.”

The visiting Knights were able to find a degree of success early from the outside, putting JCHS down 2-0. The Lady Greyhounds countered back, getting a considerable push along the right wing and having a shot to score off an empty net.

Jones County, however, was unable to capitalize against a well-tested Centennial team that came in having played teams from throughout the northern arc of the Atlanta area.

The Knights added two more second-half goals for the final 4-0 margin.

Jones County loses a total of five seniors, including a core of its defensive back line — Cadence Tanner and Mikalyla Mallory — in addition to goalie Daisy Blanton.

“They’re just great kids.

They’re good people. They want what’s best for the school and this program,” Coley said. “You don’t get good groups like that all the time.”
