Edmonds pleased after first season, eager to challenge for starting job

ALUMNI UPDATE

After one year of playing collegiately, former Jones County quarterback Devin Edmonds has gotten a taste of success playing for Shorter University.

Now, he’s aiming for even bigger things going into his second year with the Hawks after being one of six players to see time under center for Shorter last season. Edmonds worked his way into the lineup as the season went on a year ago, playing in two games.

One of those appearances came against Kentucky State, a school that also recruited him while at JCHS.

“It was pretty good. I learned so many things from high school. As a freshman, you can only do so much, but I am blessed to be able to play a few games,” Edmonds said. “The second game was against Kentucky State, someone that recruited me. It was great seeing some guys I knew. I was 6-of-7 with 80 yards passing, so that was not too bad.”

There’s a marked difference when it comes to moving up from the high school level to college, and Edmonds says it was even moreso at the quarterback position.

“Tempo, the game moves way faster than in high school. It’s a lot of getting acclimated. In high school, you think you’re ‘the guy,’ but when you get to college, you’re just a regular guy,” Edmonds said. “It’s a big adjustment. Going to a new offense in college, it’s way more words and terminology, and a lot of things you have not seen in high school. It’s a big difference.”

Edmonds is in line to compete for the starting spot going into the fall for the Hawks, who open the season Aug. 29 against Andrew College.

“I’ll be competing for the No. 1 spot, so I’m grateful for that,” Edmonds said. “I’m blessed to play a game at a level that I feel I can play at.”
