Former Greyhounds’ defensive standout aboard to coach outside linebackers

As a senior during the 2021 season, Kaleb Wiggins helped anchor the Greyhounds’ defense with an excess of 100 tackles. Now, he’s tasked with helping spearhead Jones County’s defense as a new member of the coaching staff.

Wiggins officially joined the Greyhounds as a defensive assistant in the offseason, coming aboard as outside linebackers coach. This is not Wiggins’ first stint coaching JCHS, having been a community coach in 2023. Now, however, the role is greater as the 2022 Jones County High School graduate is a fulltime assistant coach as he tutors Jones County’s outside linebackers.

“It’s been fun. They’re an energetic and hardworking group,” Wiggins said. “They’re tough players; they give 100 percent each day. They’re just great kids.”

Being able to coach within a community of which he was shaped has meaning in itself for Wiggins, who is part of a defensive staff now led by defensive coordinator Reid Ford.

“It’s really exciting, I’m so thankful to be able to come back here with Coach Montgomery,” Wiggins said. “I think we’re really building something special here, so I am really excited to be part of it.”

But it goes beyond that for Wiggins, who is also excited to be able to coach under JCHS head coach Justin Montgomery, who gained a reputation for defensive prowess before being hired as the Greyhounds’ head coach.

“I’m just thankful for a guy who will mentor me,” Wiggins said. “He’s a hard-working guy who loves football, so I’m just trying to be a sponge and learn as much as I can.”
