Jones County’s New Chief Tax Appraiser issued a press release last week about property tax assessments that will soon be in mailboxes if they have not already been received.
Chief Appraiser Lori Buchanan issued the release June 24, which states the annual property assessment notices to property owners would be mailed June 29. She explained the notices reflect the property’s 2026 assessed value as determined by the Jones County Board of Assessors.
“During the past year, Jones County completed a county-wide revaluation of real property that was conducted by Technical Appraisal Services. The purpose of the revaluation was to ensure that properties are assessed fairly and equitably and that assessed values reflect current market conditions. As a result of the revaluation, some property owners may notice changes in their assessed values.”
Buchanan said it is important to remember that the assessment notice is not a tax bill. The tax bills will not be mailed until the county tax digest is approved and tax rates have been established by the Jones County Board of Commissioners, Jones County Board of Education and the City of Gray.
Another important bit of information is that any property owner who disagrees with their assessment has the right to appeal.
That appeal, however, must be filed within 45 days of the mailing of the assessments. The final deadline to appear is Aug. 13.
Appeals may be submitted by mail or delivered in person to the Jones County Tax Assessor’s Office.
“Appeals submitted by mail must be postmarked on or before Aug. 13, 2026, to be considered timely filed. Metered mail received after the appeal deadline will not be accepted as proof of timely filing.”
Instructions for filing an appeal are included on the assessment notice.
The Jones County Board of Tax Assessors approved the values for the county’s preliminary 2026 Real Property Digest at their June 2 meeting and values for the county’s preliminary Personal Property Digest at a June 12 called meeting.
The press release ended with a statement by Buchanan.
“The Jones County Board of Assessors is committed to ensuring that all properties are assessed fairly and equitably in accordance with Georgia law. Staff are available to answer questions regarding assessments, exemptions and the appeals process.”
